2 Replies and 3074 Views The Aliens  3074  2 Started by  Jairzinho Possibly the most annoying gig I have ever been to. I hate self indulgent w*nkers like that singer. I went to hear music not listen to him spouting on, thinking he was Billy Connolly. A shame really because he can actually sing.

4 Replies and 3115 Views Arctic Monkeys - Malahide Castle  3115  4 Started by  John Doe So, any Cluas heads at this I went on Saturday and had such a good time I ended up going again on Sunday. The Arctics ruled. I was disappointed with Supergrass though who insisted on playing some new songs. Save it for your own headline gigs lads, at a festival you really just want to hear the greatest hits....

0 Replies and 2227 Views Malajube / Dark Room Notes  2227  0 Started by  muzak Anyone at the Malajube / Dark Room Notes gig in Crawdaddy last night I thought Dark Room Notes were excellent again and they're bringing some new material into their set since the last time I saw them - definitely one of the few really good Irish bands to watch at the moment. They also emptied the smoking/beer garden on a sunny evening as the majority of the crowd came in to see them, which I was surprised at. Malajube were really great, just natural, relaxed performers - their extensive live e...

3 Replies and 3468 Views Kojii in E. Dorans last Saturday  3468  3 Started by  Kat I randomly wandered into Dorans last saturday night bored and sober as this band Kojii were coming on stage. I never heard of them but there was some serious guitar coming from downstairs and I thought 'that sounds like it rocks' I get through the crowd and there's this hot young one coming on stage with her fishnets thigh-high boots, chains and some serious sexy buzz hanging off her. So I'm expecting some hot chick in a rock band singing all sweet and nice while the fellas do all the hard work....

5 Replies and 3747 Views Au Revoir Simone  3747  5 Started by  dermot_trellis Thought they were great in Whelans last night - anybody else head along A really fun show, and they seemed genuinely delighted with the response they were getting.. I've checked out some of their recorded work and thought it was interesting but patchy, came across much better in a live setting. Cap Pas Cap were okay, I remember being really impressed by them a few months back but they seemed a little repetitive last night. Didn't catch the name of the first support act, reasonable hi-energy syn...

4 Replies and 3023 Views Duke Special  3023  4 Started by  aidan I saw him live last night in Paris and I've never been so affected by a concert. It was entertaining and moving and joyous and basically just bloody brilliant. I hardly expect a debate here: could anyone NOT love this guy's music

3 Replies and 5218 Views Cat Power in Tripod.  5218  3 Started by  Peejay Bit dreary, I thought. They kept her voice pretty low in the mix (is she self concious), so rather than hearing her sing you just sort of got a sense of her, maybe that was the point. The crowd seemed receptive but I swear, half of them woke up during that big feedback squeel during I've Been Loving You Too Long. Even Satisfaction didn't get anyone dancing. The band were alright, a bit overpowering. I left for the bar about three-quarters of the way through and it sounded like ...

2 Replies and 2899 Views Switches  2899  2 Started by  Trix I, like most of the crowd there (I'm guessing) had free tickets to this show, and I'm not surprised I wouldn't have paid to see them. The Gorgeous Colours were good and Ham Sandwich were great as always, but the Switches just did not entertain me. They did suffer from bad sound at the start but I reckon the fact the lead singer was off his face and he left his jaw on the other side of the room didn't help proceedings. I thought I was leaving half way through the set but it turns out they only...

6 Replies and 3064 Views Bloc Party  3064  6 Started by  aidan I saw Bloc Party last night at the Olympia in Paris - I wouldn't have gone but the ticket was offered to me by a friend. Anyway, a fairly ordinary band that plays very flat and uncatchy music. I danced once - for the hit off their first album (you know the one). Isn't it strange to be bored at a gig and turn around to see people who ADORE the band, for whom tonight is the most exciting night in ages, who can recite (loudly, passionately) every seemingly-bland and unremarkable lyric

1 Replies and 2561 Views Nina Hynes live in Paris  2561  1 Started by  aidan I was at Nina Hynes' concert here in Pareee last night - she played songs from her new album, and I was fairly impressed. Terrible sound problems notwithstanding, it was a great set. Fair play to her. For a bit more detail, check out the latest entry in the French Letter blog. I'd definitely recommend seeing her shows in Eire in the coming weeks, and I think the album is due out the end of next week; should be a good one.

13 Replies and 3170 Views The Immediate/Superjimenez/The Chaptres  3170  13 Started by  Dolly Was at this gig last night in Whelans - venue was jam packed! Anyone else there First up was The Chapters. They were good, didn't quite get the crowd going and seemed a little bit lethargic at times but musicianship was excellent, albeit no real stand out tracks. Great start to the night though. Next up was Superjimenez. I don't think i've come across such an exciting new talent in ages. Endless bags of energy, got the crowd involved, looked great (goggles on the guitarist were h...

2 Replies and 2592 Views Cooper Temple Clause and Aleko  2592  2 Started by  Archie Was very disappointed in Aleko, but wow to Cooper temple Clause. I particularly liked the disastrous middle section which led to them not playing Written Apology. Great entertainment from the guitarist/bassist on the right, of whom I'm now very jealous. I love his guitar style.

(Topic has multiple pages1 2 )
Just back from Arcade Fire's first Olympia date. Very possibly the best gig I've ever been to. Way better than the recent London one I was at. When the band didn't arrive on stage till close to 10 I was worried about the Olympia's curfew, but they played till 11.40! Two encores. Highlights were Black Wave/Bad Vibrations; Will Butler climbing up to the balcony on the outside of the boxes, while playing a drum; Win shoving his guitar in our faces as the band segued from Power Out to Rebellion etc ...

1 Replies and 3013 Views Scott Matthews  3013  1 Started by  Eric Did anyone go to Scott Matthews last night in Whelans. Although it was just himself and his guitar I thought it was a really excellent gig. He is a top player and has a voice to match... not to mention his inbetween song jibberings I met him in the bar afterwards - sounds bloke.
