My Brightest Diamond - Bring me the Workhorse 2030 0
Started by bort
A friend loaned me this. He bought it after seeing her in Whelans recently. It's a very impressive piece of work, well worth a listen. Her voice is great and the phrasing is reminiscent of Jeff Buckley at times. But it's nice to hear his influence somewhere else than just high-pitched male singer songwriters.
I had heard she plays in Sufjan Stevens backing band but her own music is nothing like that. It's hard to pin down, definitely sounds like a band rather than just a singer songwriter...

I dont have just one song to recommend but a kind of collective.
This label was brought to my attention when a guy under the guise of Major Matt Mason USA added us on myspace.
Really amazing stuff.

His other projects Schwervon and Kansas State Flower are equally as impressive.
Quasi, Yo la Tengo and Marijuana are named as influences and they say they sound like: Kermit the frog and/or Mountain goats on valium.

Do you love Herman Dune It's really hard not to - poetic and silly and trumpets and laconic guitars. I think you should probably watch this very very lovely video for I Wish I Could See You Soon:

And then listen to Not On Top on his myspace type thing:

I have to declare an interest, in that I know this band, but hopefully I've been here long enough tha- oh, s**t, my account got restarted didn't I Well, I used to post as 'dera' and I really have been here ages, and this song is produced by Brian O'Shaughnessy, so I thought that was legitimate interest enough to justify posting here.
And also, it's f**king ace.

How ya doing
Theres a blues/rock band from Athenry called the Deans I read about recently and managed to find a sample mp3. Its not really my thing but the guitar solo in the smaple is pretty impressive since the guitarist is only 16 (or thereabouts I think). If you wanna check it out, head to:

Best French music of 2006 2763 1
Started by aidan
The new edition of the French Letter column features some really deadly music from the last twelve months - including links to myspaces and websites for you to listen to them for yourselves! Most of the songs are in English, and you should already know at least one of them from Irish radio airplay (but no Bob Sinclar, I promise!).
Anyone who has ever read anything I've previously written here on CLUAS will probably guess (correctly) that all the tunes are catchy pop songs by glamorous peo...

Don't know whether this thread is mostly about new bands/albums but here goes....
I've no idea how popular David Bryne is or not as a solo artist, but I thought I'd mention this epononymous album which I think is overlooked by a lot of people. Certainly I've never encountered any one else with a copy (maybe I move in the wrong circles ;-) . I think I picked it up in a sale somewhere years ago (Anyone remember Our Price in the Square, Tallaght) and listened to it a few times before putting i...

I've been listening to them for a while now, but seeing them twice this week has made me fall ABSOLUTELY in love with them. They're the most joyous, danceable, pretty, geeky, twee, perfect pop band I've heard in at least a week.
Here is a rather lovely music video for Rent A Wreck:

The Trip by Jarvis Cocker / Steve Mackey 1931 0

Now, compilations are just not my thing.
But this is just wonderful - I confess I'd never heard of 90 of the artists or tunes on this record, but it is a wonderful voyage of discovery to embark upon. From 60s psychedelia to to truly bizarre cover versions of classics like Waiting For The Man, this record has just catapulted onto my end of the year's best list.
Isn't it great to make a random and completely unexpected discovery.
