Stagger Lee/Dagger Lees split 2735 10
Started by aidan
I'm sorry to see that The Dagger Lees (TAFKA Stagger Lee) have split: they had some good tunes. From what they say, it all seems amicable and not 'Kramer vs Kramer':http://blogs.myspace.com/index.cfm...=465431151

Road Records to remain in business? - In Todays Times 2815 5
Started by floodzer
Following on from last month’s story that Road Records is to close, On The Record has learned that moves are now underway to ensure the Dublin record store will remain open for business. These plans revolve around a Save Road Records investment club with a number of music industry personnel and other interested parties taking a shareholding in the business. It is hoped that this investment will mean that the Fade Street store remains open and allow it to develop a long term strategy. Furter deta...

Results of the 2008 Readers Poll 6193 15
Started by admin
The top 40 albums of 2008 - as voted by the CLUAS readers - have been drawn up and can be checked out on this page. Of the 9 Irish acts on the shortlist it was Jape who landed the most votes, securing a very respectable number, more than the likes of Sigur Ros, Nick Cave and Kings of Leon. Nice one, Richie.
Thanks to all who voted. The results of the writers poll will follow in 24 hours.

Road Records closing - what does it mean for the rest of us? 2689 6
Started by Archie
With Road Records closing, Dublin's losing one of the strongest supporter's of Irish indie (on any side, commercial or otherwise).
The closure is pretty clearly a result of this boring ol' 'economic downturn' business...what other effects do you think it will have on the Irish music scene as it is Are musicians, labels, industry people feeling the backlash
Have any of ye music fans stopped buying albums because of it, or was the loss of sales just, well, the way things were going anyway...

.. nothing ever REALLY happens around here.
Last time I looked, complaining about Glen Hansard was APPEARANTLEY controversial.
What next - don't slag off Westlife or
god forbid, Samantha Mumba.
Fick sake.
Next thing you know... Coldplay will be in the end of year pole whereas Tricky will be just another also ran. Even Today FM have a new site. So I heard.
Blah blah bland.

A pity, as it's still good to have old-fashioned inky papery magazines. Hopefully the website can stay viable. But did it really jump the shark with that Abba cover http://www.state.ie/blog/state-issu...ouncement/

2008 - an awesome year for Pop. 2987 5
Started by Binokular
Lately I'd been feeling a bit cynical about the state of mainstream pop music. Shame on me for being so negative, I just needed to look at popjustices top 104 singles of the year.

Yes, of course about 3/4 of it is muck, but 90 of everything is rubbish so that's a pretty good quality ratio. Just look at some of the genius singles released this year.

Bono to be columnist for NY Times 3899 11
Started by admin
Bono has been hired by the NY Times to pen between six and ten op-ed pieces next year. I presume he'll use most of these articles as a platform for his drop the debt efforts, but hopefully he'll branch out a bit and get stuck into other matters, maybe even some relating to music god forbid. No matter what his writing style is something I've often found to be quite grating at times, hopefully he'll reign it in a bit with his pieces for the Grey Lady. But I have my doubts.

Discussion board upgrade: good news, bad news 2340 0
Started by host
Good news:
Last week I upgraded the software ('Active Modules') that runs the CLUAS discussion board. The new updated engine (v4.1) that runs the board is blisteringly fast
compared to the previous version (v3.7). But there are loads of other
improvements (such as a rich text editor for people posting topics)
which will be rolled out soon. The board also now looks a bit different
to the past, this look is not yet finalised but it soon will be as part
of a new look to be rolled out across a...

Richie Havens Review on this board 2130 0
Started by LizziecCornish
Hello there,
I'm new to this board, found you by 'accident' to be honest...but I'm glad I did. I've just finished reading a great review of a Richie Havens gig, on the board, from back in 2005:
http://www.cluas.com/music/gigs/richie_havens.htm
..and one of the other artists mentioned on there was a Canadian guy called Bruce Murdoch. Richie had sung a great song of Bruce's during that gig, called 'Let's Lay Down Our Drum'
Well, I just wanted to tell anyone who may b...

Pop songs in Irish 17045 21
Started by aidan
It was a pub conversation, of course. We were wondering if there were pop songs in Irish - hit singles or even just any old pop/rock songs as gaeilge. ('An Poc Ar Buile' is trad so it doesn't count, 'Aon Focail Eile' is in English except its title/chorus, and 'An Cat Dubh' by U2 is all in English).
So, anyone know any
I remembered a Eurosong entry from when I was young. (One song had to be in Irish each year.) The chorus has been stuck in my head ever since. The song is called...

Gig of the Year? 3129 9
Started by Iambeave
Any thoughts on the best gig of the year I really enjoyed Battles at Vicar Street, and Dan Deacon was amazing too - as for smaller gigs around the country, a Justice-style Dublin electro duo called DeadBots played in a small nightclub in Tullamore - class. I also got to see Ham Sandwich in Tullamore in the town square (bejaysus) - didn't realise that living at home for a couple of months would actually be a good link to catch some real talent.
Any obscure/unheard of favourite gigs of th...

Dirt cheap CDs thanks to plummeting sterling 3025 8
Started by eoghan
The recent plunge in the strength of sterling is resulting in dirt cheap CDs from the likes of CDWOW.com and Play.com. CDWOW.com early last week had a day long 'happy hour' with 1 pound off everything and I got two recent releases for GBP 6.99 instead of the usual 7.99, P&P included. According to my Visa statement this translated to a ridiculous EUR 8.30 per CD. And sterling has fallen in further in value since then.
We could soon be seeing 1 pound for 1 euro. The 7 euro new release coul...
