16 Replies and 2118 Views Tom Dunne's top 10 Landmark Albums  2118  16 Started by  off the post Ok, another poll, but ffs, The Libertines at no. 1 and apparantly 50 of the vote. I must be way behind the times. Metallica at no. 8. I would have a problem with too. The rest, fair enough, I never really got Nirvana or the whole grunge scene in general, but I can see why they are no. 2. They spoke for a generation etc.. 1. The Libertines – Up the Bracket 2. Nirvana – Nevermind 3. Stone Roses - Stone Roses 4. The Strokes - Is This It 5. Radiohead- The Bends 6. The Beat...

3 Replies and 1182 Views Site suggestion  1182  3 Started by  nerraw Just wondering. With the huge wealth of knowledge here, it seems such a shame for the website to be so out of date contest wise. The album reviews are ancient, the most recent gig review is over a month old. From reading posts, plenty of people here have gone to dozens in the meantime. I understand time constraints etc but would it not be possible to give some posters site privelages and allow to update the content themselves

10 Replies and 1493 Views Van Morrison: Biggest contribution to Irish music?  1493  10 Started by  Super Nintendo Chalmers With the mention of astrel weeks in someone elses thread the other day it got me to thinking, is Van Morrission Ireland's best contribution to modern music has any other Irish person/band made as significant contribution to music, over such a long period of time i cant really think of any other person who has produced albums as good as astrel weeks and moon dance. granted his last album wasn't great but am i way off sorry not trying to start any kind of lists.

6 Replies and 1934 Views Tayto sue Toasted Heretic  1934  6 Started by  miwadi You may have heard that Tayto are threatening Toasted Heretic over their use of tayto like images on their latest “Now in Nostalgia Flavour” re release. As the cover of “Music for Swinging Celibate” (on which this is based) is one of the iconic Irish album covers, I would ask you to support TH by asking C&C (nicely) to cop on at http://www.candcgroupplc.com/contact.asp Full (funny) story at http://www.toastedheretic.com/ and on last nights Dave Fanning show. and they say LSD isn't w...

12 Replies and 1810 Views My fave band is more obscure than yours...  1810  12 Started by  admin In another thread this week there were suggestions that some board members here couldn't resist an opportunity to talk up their love for some fabulously obscure acts, and in so doing increasing their chance of (allegedly) looking real sophisticated. Or something. So it’s time, me thinks, for an explicit thread on this... What are your fave obscure bands out there Allow me to kick this off by offering my lurve of the following two very fine but unlikely-to-be-played-on-FM-104 bands: Band...

24 Replies and 2568 Views Eamonn Carr on Ryan Adams  2568  24 Started by  Rev Jules Eamonn Carr does a real, delicious knife job on Ryan Adams and his new album '29' in today's Evening Herald. I think the phrase 'vomit writing' is used in relation to (B)Ryan Adams songs. Personally, Eamon doesn't need to convince me but the article is a fun read.

6 Replies and 1163 Views New Pantheon Award  1163  6 Started by  Mully The Arcade Fire and Mercury winner Antony and the Johnsons are among the artists nominated for the inaugural New Pantheon Award in the US. Billboard reports that the New Pantheon is modelled on the Mercury Music Prize and continues the work of the now-defunct Shortlist Music Prize, honouring albums that have sold less than 500,000 copies in the US. Irish artist Damien Rice won the Shortlist Music Prize for his album 'O' in 2003. The other nominees for the New Pantheon Award are: Animal...

1 Replies and 1260 Views Today FM & Cluas, up a tree...  1260  1 Started by  Unicron ...Seeing as the original title of 'Today FM <3's Cluas' has been deemed unsuitable... So I was driving home on Sunday night listening to Alison Curtis and she namechecked the site, Tom Dunne just did the same, quoting liberally from the Choice Awards thread (quick, delete all the nasty things we've said about him). You've hit the big time Eoghan.

8 Replies and 1311 Views Daytime Radio  1311  8 Started by  Mully A quote from Cormac Battle (hold off on the personal attacks, people) talking about the show he has on Sunday nights. Cormac said: 'This gives me the chance to play music that I love to a really wide audience and also to help new bands get heard. Only RTÉ 2fm has the ability and willingness to do that on a national level and I'm really looking forward to the opportunity and excited by the challenge.' At the moment, he's on during the day, filling in for Larry Gogan. He was playing Madon...
