14 Replies and 3128 Views Choice Music Prize shortlist Jan 10...  3128  14 Started by  aidan I see that the shortlist for the Choice prize will be announced on 10 January and the prizegiving ceremony will be on 28 February: http://www.imro.ie/newstastic//news.phpitem=9486 Any suggestions for what SHOULD be on the shortlist From browsing through what the rock writers have been praising in their end-of-year pieces, the whole prize looks like a two-horse-race between Fionn Regan and The Immediate.... but as a singer-songer (Julie Feeney) won it last year, will a rock grou...

6 Replies and 2135 Views Drawing From The Tradition  2135  6 Started by  Learphol What role, in such a commercial environment, does the music of our country have to today’s recording artists Irish music, taking many guises including folk, traditional, country, rock and more recently ‘indie’, has enjoyed great success stemming from an upsurge in interest over the past 40 years, using the facilities of an international market. Many artists can claim to draw from the rich tradition of Irish music, but those who have been most successful have all conformed to the demand...

11 Replies and 2298 Views What was the best tune of 2006?  2298  11 Started by  Binokular What do you reckon was the best song of 2006 Can be a single or an album track or an unreleased demo or some random MP3 you found, doesn't matter. Rather than the usual drill of starting a thread like this by posting what I reckon is cool, I just wanna know what you all think and why. You can only pick one track though. No 'honorable' mentions. Nail your colors to the mast dammit!

9 Replies and 2707 Views Myspace in trouble  2707  9 Started by  comet Universal Music, the group which owns, alongside others, Polydor, Fiction, Island and Def Jam is suing social networking site, Myspace. The label is claiming that: 'The foundation of MySpace is its so-called 'user-generated content.' However, much of that content is not 'user-generated' at all. Rather, it is the 'user-stolen' intellectual property of others, and MySpace is a willing partner in that theft.' The industry behemoth is suing Myspace for $150,000 per infringement (which, when c...

Despite campaigners continued attempts to have the building listed, Fulham and Hammersmith Council have approved proposals by property developers Parkway Properties to knock the venue down and turn it into a restaurant and office block. 6 Replies and 2196 Views Spencer Krug  2196  6 Started by  The_Pen15 Something I've always thought is how weird it is that his music projects are so relatively famous. I mean I love Wolf Parade and Sunset Rubdown by all accounts, but I don't see how he has such an audience when the music isn't really that accessable. Maybe thats just my perception, I don't know. Just wondering how you perceive his stuff. Anyway carry on children!

5 Replies and 2019 Views New Music Mag  2019  5 Started by  klootfan Just bought a new music magazine in Easons. Its called Play Music ( Get Involved ) Its issue 3 at this stage. Seems pretty decent, free cd on the cover. Worked out at €6.68 which was a tad expensive considering the UK price is only £3.50 Anyway, along with the usual gig reviews, and album reviews, there is an emphasis on new unsigned bands such that half the tracks on the give away cd are unsigned bands. Anyway, ive yet to give it a full read, so ill report back when ...
