12 Replies and 3834 Views Once - Glen Hansard  3834  12 Started by  Punchbowl Was at the Premiere of Glen Hansards 'new' movie 'Once' last night. I have to say I found it one of the most enjoyable and charming movies I've seen. For those who don;t know much about it, Glen plays a down at heel busker who strikes up a friendship with an immigrant girl who sells flowers on Grafton St. What unfolds then is a touching and often funny tale of two people, two cities and a load of music. I was surprised, but I guess I shouldn't of been, at the amount of Frames music used ...

1 Replies and 1992 Views Second Wilco London Gig!  1992  1 Started by  vandala I posted here last night asking if anyone had spare tickets for the Wilco London gig. The thread got deleted, presumably as such a thing could be perhaps construed as an opportunity for touts. Anyway, the Gods were smiling it appears: a second gig has just been announced and tickets are available through ticketmaster etc. I just got two. Happy days!

(Topic has multiple pages1 2 )
OK, for the week that's in it (as Saturday is the national binge-drinking-and-public-vomiting festival), let's have a little straw poll of: 1) Best Irish song (single or album track) ever 2) Best Irish album ever Pick just one in each category, no lists of top fives or whatever So, for me: song: 'Teenage Kicks' album: 'Achtung Baby' And for you....

5 Replies and 2720 Views Neil Young Archives  2720  5 Started by  Peejay Got this link in an email the other day: http://www.repriserecords.com/neilarchives/ Neil's (apparently) been planning this Archives project since the mid-70's. I've only been hearing about it for a couple of years now, its more of a myth than anything else. He's always talking it up but its never seen the light of day until the two recent live albums. Very excited about this clip though. I think he's going through a dry patch at the moment, the past few albums haven't caught my...

2 Replies and 1723 Views DRM free music sites?  1723  2 Started by  Binokular I'm starting this thread to hopefully gather a comprehensive list of legitimate sites to buy DRM free music downloads (as I HATE iTunes or similar stores that use DRM). Heres some for starters emusic.com (subscription based) beatport.com (mainly Electronic/Dance) bleep.com (warp) Kompakt-mp3.net (Kompakt) Anyone think of any more (other than allofmp3.com which is sort of a grey area)

In my opinion. I listen to many, many, many genres of music and have TRIED so hard to listen to metal over the years, but I just can't because the majority of it is so s**te. There. I've said it. There are a couple of exceptions, but still: crappy wappy snappy.

After flirting briefly with using my mobile as my portable music player, Im back to using my iAudio X5. ( stupid headphone adapters on the mobile kept breaking ) The iAudio X5 has quality sound on it, but dreadful battery performance. I reckon I charge it every day. What are the rest of ye all doing... saw a small documentary on the Walkman the other night... tapes eh.. remember those!!

18 Replies and 5845 Views The Velvet Underground  5845  18 Started by  Peejay Hugely influential, but barely mentioned. Just wondering what the general consensus of this band is on the board. A quick run-down of the albums: The Velvet Underground & Nico (1967) The debut, made slap bang in the middle of Andy Warhols patronage of the band. Andy paired them up with the gorgeous (but cold) model Nico. Its a strange early twist in the bands history but Lou and John rose to the challenge. Some say it was out of their admiration/love for Andy, some say b...

3 Replies and 2008 Views EMI - big 4 to become the big 3?  2008  3 Started by  Binokular As anyone with an interest in music knows, apart from the indies, there are only really four big record companies; Sony BMG, Universal, Warner and EMI. It's also old news at this stage that EMI are in trouble financially. Warner are planning on making a takeover bid. All pretty boring business news so far and it's hard to have sympathy for a bunch of DRM loving pigopolists, but I was thinking about what this could mean for popular music. For a start EMI is the last major record label who...
