Thin Lizzy not feeling the Vibe 5116 2
Started by rcleere
For 24 years the annual 'Vibe
for Philo' event has celebrated the life, work, and musical legacy of Philip Lynott in his native city,
Dublin. Originating in a personal request by Lynott in 1981 to his old friend Smiley Bolger to 'do a vibe for me sometime,' it has
become something of a mecca for LIZZY
supporters old and new worldwide. Over the years, Eric Bell, Brian Robertson,
Brian Downey, Scott Gorham, Darren Wharton,
Midge Ure, John Sykes, and Marco

Smiths - most influential band of last 50 years? 14667 27
Started by tobble
The Smiths have been voted the most influential pop band of the past 50 years in an NME poll. Fair enough you might say, but what I love is the London Independent Newspaper has run an Editorial about this! Check it out at:
http://argument.independent.co.uk/leading_articles/story.jspstory=285795
So do you think it's true My feeling is that 50 years is stretching it a bit but to call them the most influential band of the 30 years would be fair dinkum me thinks.
that's my 2 euro cents

Plenty of complaints about Gun's n' Roses 'performance' - or lack thereof - at the O2 last night. Wasn't there myself (I always thought they were overrated to be honest) - any Cluasers able to provide first hand accounts

There was a time...back in the dim and distant past...when buying a concert ticket was relatively easy. First of all, there was PUBLICITY. Your favourite band announced that they were touring. If you were lucky, they were playing in Dublin. After that it was a simple endurance test. You turned up at Golden Discs or HMV or whoever, the doors opened at 9 o'clock and you BOUGHT your ticket with cash. If it was a popular act...your U2s and so forth...you might have to queue up for a few hours before...

Another month, another cult music figure dies. If you read Simon Reynolds' excellent 'Rip It Up And Start Again' you'll see just how unsavoury he could be - and at exactly the same time just how enthralling and entertaining he was. For good or ill, he shaped the modern music industry - for example, hit records by people who can't sing:

AOL who own Bebo yesterday announced that they are thinking of either selling it or shutting it down:

Bebo has been haemorrhaging visitors (as you can see in the following chart - 45 down in 1 year) and AOL don't see any value in continuing to pump money into it:
Ireland is one market where Bebo has got a secure foothold, at least in a certain demographic. Should it close down can w...

The nominations are no longer a mystery....place your bets!!For my money it's a fairly disappointing list lacking in imagination! No mention for Holy Roman Army, 8Ball (brilliant album), Patrick Kelleher and others. The inclusion of Laura Izibor and Swell Season merits the 'wtf' response for this year. Adrian Crowley for the win. And So I Watch You From Afar - And So I Watch You From AfarBellX1 - Blue Lights On The RunwayCODES - Trees Dream In AlgebraAdrian Crowley - Season of the SparksDark Ro...

Suede reform for gig 2951 0

A once-off charity show in London in March. But it's Richard Oakes on guitar, not Bernard Butler: www.nme.com/news/suede/49240 First band I ever loved. Their final album was awful and the others haven't aged so well - but still: in their prime they were awesome. Even Luke Haines says so (in his recent autobiography) and he hates everybody:

This is pure genius. Aside from the great man delivering a haunting version of an anthem for our times, the retro cross-fade camera shots are lovely. (There's one that's held for a second or two in pure '70s styleee.) Anyway, one that'll sear your soul: &91;if video clip does not appear - it doesn't seem to in IE7 - then you can see the clip here&93;

Bono writes again 2730 0
Started by aidan
In case you missed it, a couple of weekends ago there appeared the latest NY Times op-ed from Bono:www.nytimes.com/2010/01/03/opinion/03bono.html Credit where it's due: this one is fairly readable and interesting. However, the Napoleon of Killiney is always good for one cringe-inducing moment, and this article has a cracker: 'In Ireland, at the height of the “Troubles,” it was said that the only solution for rabid sectarianism was to let 1,000 punk-rock bands bloom...' Of course.
