CLUAS End of year poll: finalising the shortlist 5251 17
Started by admin
CLUAS is running a poll for its members, but to vote you need to be logged in! If you are not already a member you are invited to sign up for membership (it's free).
Background to this poll:
Next week CLUAS readers will be invited to vote for their favourite album of 2007 (from a shortlist of forty 2007 albums chosen by the CLUAS writers). The problem is the writers reached consensus on 38 albums to be included. Choosing the last two albums to make the list is less than obvious. What...

Kurt Cobain vs. Jimi Hendrix 3579 3
Started by Peejay
Two leftie-guitarist songwriters (Washington born) who rose to prominence almost overnight with a hard-edged music that made everyone stand up and pay attention. Both fronted pared down no-nonsense bands, released three studio albums in their brief existence in the spotlight and both died in slightly mysterious circumstances after a rapid rise to the top of the musical heap. Too rapid, maybe.
In a way, both are slightly underrated. The songs you'd associate most with them don't do justice...

FAO Marie - Electric Picnic / Alabama 3 / Kevin Rowlands DJ set 2507 5
Started by Dr.Nightdub
Hi folks, first post on here and it's a long shot...
I was talking to a woman named Marie at the Chemical Brothers at this year's Picnic, then ran into her again at Alabama 3 last month then AGAIN at the Kevin Rowlands DJ set in Whelan's the other night.
Figured we'd better try and meet by design rather than by accident, she agreed. Went to ring her on Wednesday only to discover that I'm a complete IDIOT and only saved her name into my phone but not her number.
Ideal scen...

Haven't thought this through much so may regret posting this, but I was just thinking about the music I've been into lately, e.g. Ellen Allien, LCD Soundsystem, Modeselektor, Electrelane, etc. to name just a few and it occurred to me that very little of it was made by people under the age of 25.
Rock'n'roll folklore always seem to have it that you needed to make your masterpiece by 25 or you weren't ever going to, yet the music that interests me most seems to be made by an older gene...

No standing tickets left, just crappy seats in the stalls/circle. Where the hell did this come out of No advance word or nothing. Maybe if it was announced at least a week before tickets went on sale then we might have a chance to get decent tickets Plus they seem overpriced. Remaining tickets in stalls/circle are over 70 euro including charges. I know she is a big-name artist and all but so are Wilco, possibly even more so, and their tickets are 25 euro less. But why was it announced at such ...

.... Any appropriate recommendations Ian Dempsey played Will Young's 'I think I Better Leave Right Now' for him this morning.. I'm too depressed to think of any, though I suppose I shouldn't be too upset - who wants to go to Switzerland anyway.. even Hitler didn't bother his hole!

Are gigs too long? 2183 8
Started by Ally
was just reading and replying to the comments on the arcade fire thread... almost everyone said the gigs sagged a bit in the middle...
i've thought about this before... i almost always* prefer an act to play for no more than an hour and to be sent out in to the cold still wanting more... anyone else
*note this tends to refer to indie-rock type acts especially... different music needs different things

I usually buy my musical equipment from Thomann.de .... apart from the diabolical way they ship their guitars (I'd to send back 3 guitars due to the necks being damaged during transport), I find them very good indeed - miles cheaper than getting ripped off by the shops here & a much better choice of goods available... plus they've a decent website, which all the Irish shops here lack severely (in fact, most Irish businesses do for some unknown reason).
Anyhow, we advertised in the comic '...

Books about music 5669 25
Started by Peejay
There's times I actually read about music more than listen to it, which sounds kind of stupid but I can get burned out on music sometimes (only temporarily, thank god) and it could be something like a great book or music doc on TV to pique my interest again.
That Police thread reminded my of the Andy Summers autobiography I finished a little while ago - One Train Later. I'm not a Police fan (less so after reading this) but I thought it was a great story, very well written by the man himself...
