What song was No.1 on the day you were born? 7366 24
Started by Mudbug
OK, now you have loads of time at work to mess about...
Have you ever done this http://www.thisdayinmusic.com
It shows you what song was at No.1 on the day you were born.
(Go to 'Birthday No.1' at the top of the site).
My number 1's are:
'You're So Vain' by Carly Simon in the US
'Long Haired Lover From Liverpool' by Little Jimmy Osmond in the UK
'Ben' by Michael Jackson in Australia
Some are better than others!

New Breeders Album in 2008 2320 2
Started by Binokular
This has made my day:
http://www.pitchforkmedia.com/article/news/47618-kim-deal-talks-new-breeders-album-pixies-german
http://www.pitchforkmedia.com/page/news/47454-the-breeders-return-with-imountain-battlesi
Can't believe this will actually happen. When the Pixies got back together most people were weeing themselves in excitement, but all that was going through my head was 'guess this means there won't ever be another Breeders record', seeing as it took them long enough bet...

Radio 1 censors Pogues' Fairytale 2200 6
Started by starbelgrade
'BBC Radio 1 has said it will stand by its ban on the word 'faggot' from the Pogues' 1987 Christmas hit Fairytale of New York to avoid offence.
The word, sung by the late Kirsty MacColl as she trades insults with Shane MacGowan, has been dubbed out. '
And yet they play Ronan Keating's version - now, if anything is ever offensive, that is!

MBV to hit the 2008 festival trail? 2151 2
Started by eoghan
My Bloody Valentine were yesterday confirmed for the Benicàssim International Festival (taking place in Spain from the 17 to 20 July 2008). I guess it'll hardly be the only festival they play this summer so expect further confirmations for further summer dates, with one of them in Ireland.

Irish album of the year eh? 8921 33
Started by carry_grant
Let's put this one to bed, shall we In what has been a truly dreadful year - the latest in a long line in truth - the list alluding to the best Irish album of 2007 merely confirms this. My God, why do we accept such chronic mediocrity in this country Why is it that we feel the need to pat ourselves on the back yearly whilst alluding to our 'burgeoning music scene'
Largely - and this rarely gets alluded to in this country almost as if we're not allowed to talk about it - music has disappea...

Free album downloads - the consensus? 2456 8
Started by twisted
What does everyone make of the 'free download' phenomenon that's going on at the moment
Obviously it worked for Radiohead as they're established & got massive PR...but how will new, unknown indie acts benefit from this
Incidentally, Dubliner Chris Singleton's just made his record available as a free download at http://www.singletonmusic.com/freedownload2/
if anyone's interested.

Free Okkervil River Album 1878 0
Started by vandala
Okkervil River have uploaded a free 'album' to their website. It's a bunch of recordings of covers they've done on tour the past year. Haven't heard it yet, but I'm happy enough as it has 'Simon Smith and his Dancing Bear' on it. www.okkervilriver.com

i'm making a radio documentary about independent music shops at the moment, standard 'indie v corporate', 'cd v download', 'shop v site', 'human v machine' type angle
