2 Replies and 1062 Views Whelans New Years Eve gigs  1062  2 Started by  John Doe So were any of the good citizens of Cluas at Turn's New Years Eve gig in Whelans I was and it rocked. As well as their own cracking tunes they finished off with a cover of The Darkness 'I Believe in a Thing Called Love'.Cue mosh city. Have to say Whelans has been my choice of New Years Eve entertainment for many years now and it never disappoints. Always good bands ( Damien Dempsey last year, The Walls and Sack previous years ), great atmosphere plus the late club afterwards. All for only ...

0 Replies and 1532 Views Bad practice by Irish venues!  1532  0 Started by  bar Right I'll keep it short and to the point. There are two big issues causing a lot of concern when it comes to gigs & gigging in this country - The behaviour of bouncers & Pay2play. We're gonna try to do something about both issues but we need YOUR help. Visit www.getagig.ie and click on the 'bouncers' & 'Pay2play' links. Any time you attend or play a gig we ask that you report your experiences here. As trends begin to emerge, we'll be publishing a league table of venues. Call it name & shame ...

5 Replies and 2599 Views 2004 music predictions  2599  5 Started by  Binokular 2003 is coming to end and its been a pretty interesting year for music. Maybe not as good as say, 1977, but enough to fill me with hope for 2004. So with tongue firmly planted in cheek and based on nothing more than my deluded and ill informed view of the world, here are my predictions for music news headlines in 2004 : Tragedy strikes Kings of Leon as a band member falls victim to a freak incident where he loses circulation to his limbs. The cause is put down to getting caught in the ra...

5 Replies and 1187 Views Superb stuff  1187  5 Started by  john@soundweb.ie What's made me happy this Christmas Gary Jules and Michael Andrews beating The Darkness, Pop Idols & The Osbournes to No.1! Choke on it all o'ye! Yes i know its a cover, who cares - its great. Fits in perfectly with the ending of Donnie Darko... scanned the credits to find out if it was Michael Stipe or not (anyone else think that)... the thing is with these songs, you kinda feel like 'no, its my song - i found it! you cant commercialise it!' silly i know, but there you are.

4 Replies and 1198 Views Have a good one!  1198  4 Started by  Vent My Spleen Season's Greetings, ugly bags of mostly (music lovin') water! And so ends another year on the auld board (Spleen pauses to light last Advent candle). After a quiet couple of months, the board is really kicking over again, which is great. I'd like to thank everyone for their input, the musical jousts, the social commentary, the religious flames and downright good natured banter. Having put the world bang to rights, I think we can all rest easy and enjoy the couple of hours it takes before the ...

0 Replies and 1349 Views Schneider TM  1349  0 Started by  Binokular Was anyone at the Schneider TM gig in the Red Room in Cork on Friday Pretty amazing stuff! Initially the gig looked like it was going to be a bit of a disaster, It started two hours late. After the first song it looked like he was going to go off at deep end, he played a rather long and extreme sounding version of one the tracks from his first album 'Moist', which had the kind of noise that would probably even make a Sonic Youth fan wince. Possibly due to nerves, he and the rest of the band ...

18 Replies and 4666 Views Decent Music Magazine?  4666  18 Started by  Binokular Just wondering, am I the only one out there that cannot find a decent music magazine Foggy notions seems pretty good, but doesn't seem to be published regularly. I used to read Muzik but thats now defunct. Muzik may have been limited to dance music and I certainly did not agree with their reviews all the time, but it was irreverent, highly entertaining and some of the cover CDs were great, especially the DFA compilation. Q has turned into smash hits, NME..lets not go there, Mojo glorifies t...

Just a quick note to announce that the new, improved and reformed Uncle Nova will be getting back into action in the new year! Already tipped as 'history in the making', the bands fusion of soulfull rock and energetic funk is the breath of fresh air thats needed in the Irish music scene at present! New to the band is drummer Phillip Harford and bassist Rob Lee, both experienced and highly talented musicians. They combine with David Kane on lead and Seán Carpenter on rhythm and vocals...

1 Replies and 1366 Views the kings - again  1366  1 Started by  klootfan what a gig..f**kin brilliant. Ben kweller, as expected, was excellant. A great warm up act. In the states, the kings opened for ben kweller. But when the kings finally came on, they threw out a great set, which i have to be honest, i enjoyed more then radiohead in the olympia. Blashphemy, maybe. The mistake i made was heading to the village afterwards...sore heads all round
