Marillion (remember them!) are working independent of any major record deal and yet they gate-crashed the UK singles charts this week at 7 (ahead of big label-promoted Franz Ferdinand & Pink among others). Just to say I saw 8 ball for the first time playing in Tower Records, very impressed with their sound, melllow, great singers and good songs. anyone seen them
Also saw Hal the following day in Tower Records - pretty good 70's ish sound, nothing new though.

The last few days I've been doing some online bookings and stuff to get me over to London to see Wilco do a gig in the Astoria this coming July.
It set me thinking, travelling a distance to see a band has to be the finest compliment you can pay an act. A far more powerful statement to make about what is important to you musically than just pointing to what sits on your CD shelf or in your MP3 folder.

For the uninitiated: Melissa Auf Der Maur played bass with Hole and the Smashing Pumpkins and has released her debut solo album.
I must confess to being disappointed. The album got good reviews and having seen the gorgeous Melissa on the Pumpkins farewell tour, I was more than favourably disposed to buying her debut album.
