Gig prices. 1734 12
Started by Tombo
I noticed lately that there are huge anomalies in gig admission prices around Dublin. One night you could pay 5 smacks to go see a couple of unheard of bands and the next night you could end up paying a tenner for the same thing. What do you people think is a reasonable price to pay to see local talent Who is getting the money Is it venues or bands If it's the bands then that's not so bad. In my opinion, irrespecive of venue, if you are going to see 3 unknown bands 7 euro should be the maximu...

I read this article this morning on pitchforkmedia and thought it was brillant. The content is very interesting but the way in which the article is written is top class, whitty, insightful and entertaining for such a short piece. Check it out anyway.

Is there a life and soul to rock and roll? 1192 13
Started by Optimus
That subject ryhming scheme is NOT intentional.
Anyway...
Though it is nice to see 'rock & roll' coming to the forefront with several key bands and some other 'bands' that should have been left undiscovered, I cant help but feel like the music is slowly dying.
Music has been dying anyway since it's conception but rock has gone from what used to be the devil's music to what has now become the safe option compared to pop and dance.
We no longer have unstable visionaries with varying p...

RIP Johnny Ramone 1139 0
Started by Binokular
Sad news, we have lost yet another Ramone to the ravages of time. Johnny Ramone passed away in his sleep yesterday afternoon at his home in Los Angeles. Co-founder and guitarist with the Ramones, he was a massive influence on anyone who picked up a guitar in a punk band after him. He will be missed.

Are Damien Rice fans really Young Fogeys ? 4317 25
Started by Rev Jules
There is an article in today's Irish Independent (13/9/04) on the subject of the rise of the Young Fogey. In the section titled, 'Music for Young Fogeys' the author mentions Damien Rice's album 'O' as being a safe choice of record for young fogeys who, 'want to support the local music scene but want to give the anger and avant garde a miss'.
Over to y'all.

Any Lucky Jim Fans 1133 2
Started by klootfan
I happened across a Single from Lucky Jim for 50cent in music city there a few weeks ago, having heard the name but not the band.
It took me a couple of weeks to listen to it but when i did i was blown away by it. so i picked up the album shortly afterwards ( 10.99 in chapters) and its quality
Its a mixture between Bob Dylan, Van Morrison, Johnny Cash and a Bond Tune...quality..Its on repeat for me at the moment. Ill end up ruining it.

NO Interpol Irish Date 1092 8
Started by klootfan
So Interpol have announced their extensive European tour and have left out a date in dublin despite quite a few dates in the UK.
Bit of a let down really considering the reaction they got the last time they played.
Interestingly the admin on their board tells people not to post messages asking them to play in their country because the band dont read their message board and also dont ask about shows that havent been announced because that is the whole point of the live section.
Now in fa...

A Call To Musicians To Help Save Hill of Tara 1196 4
Started by Rev Jules
Let me put this strand into the context of Irish music with the following quotation taken from one of the ballads written by the irish composer Thomas Moore, 'The harp that once through Tara's halls / The soul of music shed / Now hangs as mute on Tara's walls / As if that soul were fled'.
At this moment, a four lane motorway is under construction through the Tara Skryne Valley. The road will pass only metres away from the Hill of Tara, with a clover leaf junction only a short distance from th...

Style over content? 4264 22

I went to see a few bands playing over the HWCHs weekend, and one band in particular were particularly disappointing - don't worry not going to name any names! They were a band that I'd heard loads about and when I finally got to see them, I suppose more out of wanting to see what all the fuss was about, I was amused to see it was more like an effort of a 'Face' photo shoot then anything else - this got me thinking...with the current trend in new wave/nouvelle vague bands that are all skinny tie...
