bloody great record. It's recorded as live and just feels lovely. IMO their best one to date.

I've only heard the new single, which a very stripped down version is also on 'The Swell Season'. I'm really liking the Bside 'No More I Love Yous' ... Not an Annie Lennox cover, thankfully.

The day isn't going anywhere near as planned when you find yourself wanting to reply to a thread that has mentioned Annie Lennox cover tunes. But here goes anyway, 'No More I Love You's' was originally penned by David Freeman and Joseph Hughes and was recorded by Lennox in 1995. There's also a really odd cover of 'Train In Vain' by The Clash on the same album.

And 'Waiting In Vain' by Bob Marley?????? I can remember some cover of it and Annie Lennox springs to mind. when i was a kid i use to love the video for 'Sweet Dreams', why do i mention these things.

I can't help but be sceptical that they've topped their glimpse of greatness that was For The Birds with this new one. The songwriting since then just seems to have lost something... a deftness of touch? Mind you, that song People Get Ready (last I heard it) had the potential to be a Great Song Of Our Times (and, yes, I know, the Frames, etc - I really don't say that lightly!)

I thought their last two albums were pretty crappy, but this is actually very good. People Get Ready is a great song, but not the best on the record - Song For Someone, Falling Slowly and True are brilliant. I haven't gone to see this band since the Dance The Devil days because the gigs became unbearable because of the crowd attending, but I might actually pop along to see them now to hear these songs.

una, answer me this (if you wish)... i posted about it under the main forum... does people get ready start with a vocal (chorus, almost immediately) or is there a slow build before the vocals enter? i guess i could just wait until i hear it but this seemingly small matter is crucial to me in this song.. thanks

Sorry for butting in, but it starts with Glen singing 'People all get ready / cuz we're tearing down the stand'........then it slowly builds up from there.

no problem, gar - thanks... that is ever so slightly annoying but not as annoying as the version he was airing where he started with the whole chorus

Okay I didn't make that clear.......it does start off with Glen singing a verse/chorus before slowly building up after the minute and a half mark. I actually prefer it over a live version I heard some time ago.

oh right.... that's really annoying... the one song with great potential has been ruined, i reckon... however - that's my opinion at the moment - i better wait and see what it sounds like on record... thanks again, gar

yeah, after watching the live version on YouTube, it doesn't sound as good on record.

d'you know what una... i just listened to the youtube and that's exactly what i don't like at the beginning so i'm worried for the recorded version... how it should have been recorded (in my oh so not humble opinion) is with at least 3 minutes of build before he even opens his mouth... they've f**ked it up, i reckon

no, I think that song has always started with singing, palace, just not with that chorus tacked on at the start, which is the bit I find distressing. I think starting with the verse still preserves the building tension for the first few minutes; straight in with the chorus, on the other hand, finishes that one off. (I do wish that there was a three minute Yo La Tengo build too.. but that's wishing the Frames were Yo La Tengo, isn't it? :) )
