If I was gay (which I'm not), these comments would incense me even more than they already have done.. to call Quint ignorant is not a personal attack, but a fact. It's ignorant to dismiss someone because of their homosexuality OR heterosexuality, and this was bandied about in quite a juvenile, immature way by more than one person on this thread.

Oh please, write to Amnesty international or something. What happened was

- Mudbug said they liked Rufus Wainwrights music

- Quint said they didn't (because they just don't like it), but also questioned if he'd have gotten as much attention if he was straight. Maybe that comment was appropriate, maybe not, either way, it's borderline. Flip it round, is say asking if Bruce Springsteen would have the same broad fanbase if he was gay much different? Maybe it's an awkward question, but that doesn't mean it doesn't hold some validity.

- You jump in getting on the uber-PC lefty weeny getting-offended-on-other-peoples-behalf moral high ground going off about rampant rampant homophobia, ignorance, cretins, blah, blah, blah.

- PeterQuaife throws in silly peurile joke, you take the bait and run with it.

Heres the thing, you want real debate? Well then you may have to tolerate someone saying something you might find offensive or disagree with. There are limits to what people can post, like anything openly hateful, but to dictate certain things as outright taboo and attempt to just shut people down when they express opinions, even if those opinions are wrong is a form of intolerance itself.

Talk about taking the moral high ground.. Binokular, aren't you the one who's come into this thread with no opinion about Rufus Wainwright, but an opinion about how people should and shouldn't argue?

I'm sure Quint/Peter Quaife are well able to hold their own.. you don't need to clarify what they meant. That's their right, not yours.

However, if you want nitpicking, you've got it.

I'll leave the Amnesty International letter for the time being, but thanks for the suggestion. God forbid that I should challenge someone who's made a controversial statement..

I would have accepted Quint's opinon on RW, if he/she had backed up their opinion with intelligence, or at least sounded in some way informed. Dismissing someone's music - whether you're a fan, or cannot stand the artist - on the basis of their sexuality is *incredibly* ignorant, there is no black and white there, as far as I'm concerned. Methinks Quint realised this when he/she was pulled up about it, and now feels like they need to stand firm on the issue, however wobbly it may be. Sad.

(By the way, long-time reader, first-time poster - so your argument doesn't hold up PQ, as convenient as it may have been).

'Uber-lefty weeny getting-offended-on-other-peoples-behalf' - you've let yourself down with that statement Binokular. I was prepared to take you seriously up until now.

Isn't there ANYONE on this forum who's prepared to discuss things in an intelligent, adult manner without feeling like they're being backed into a corner by some 'uber-lefty weeny' on a moral and musical crusade?

Ally, seems like you're the only one with a modicum of sense around here.

Jesus, and you wonder why nobody comes to Cluas anymore..

Lock away, dear, lock away. No answer for it? Don't have a comeback? Never mind - I'll head off elsewhere to find a group of people who actually have a clue what they're talking about, and who have opinions strong enough to debate..

Bye, kiddies..

Hi Quint,

I see the concept of trying to create an intelligent debate about music without resorting to pettiness, homophobia or misogyny is too hard for you to grasp, too.. It's OK though, having to back up your inflammatory comments is too much like hard work for some people. Are the words I'm using too big for you, maybe?

Can you please tell me where I was being 'homophobic', 'misogynistic' and 'inflammatory'?
