Yankee Hotel Foxtrot is a masterpeice and a departure from the more traditional country rock (although with Summerteeth they were getting away from this sound) of their previous albums, from "I am Trying To Break Your Heart" right through to "Reservations". Some of the Keyboards/effects give the album a wonderfully warm sound pushing the band to their boundries. AGIB is a good album much more guitar based thatn YHF, with a very live feel to it. It chalanges the listener (Kidsmoke etc..). Worth it tho' I agree with a previous poster. You can really see the the influence of The Band on their approach to the music. Maybe not so much from a songwriting point of view, They are a great band..and i believe an extremely important band

Apparently Jay Bennett has a solo album on the way. Interesting to see what it's like. http://www.nme.com/news/wilco/24773

2. Jay Bennett is great yet Nels Cline has to be one of the best guitar players ever to walk the planet. He walks a superb tightrope between sublime melody & experimental dissonance.
Probably true, but Bennett (for a period at least) was clearly more than just the guitar player.

...If we are talkin ex-members I have to give a shout out to Leroy Bach who played keys & guitar for most of this decade. He recorded on a ghost is born sessions but for some reason didn't want to tour hence Nels Cline & Pat Sansone.Terrific musician tho'.

Id prefer the band, but I'd settle for a solo show. Nice one.

its hard to pick a favourite wilco record, they all have great individual charms, but when you look at the crafting of the songs and the musicianship and sound of a ghost is born it really is a masterpiece!! i do love the live lp too though, you get the best of all the records and nels cline's amazing guitar work!! the guys a legend! tweedy in vicar street!! nice one!!

Jay Bennett's solo work is actually quite excellent. He should come over here around the same time Tweedy is playing.

Yes,yes, yes and yes!! I have been waiting to see the band for years since the Ambassador gig, forget what year that was,but Tweedy live will do.The best band around at the moment in my opinion, experimenting while never straying too far away from a great melody,Company In My Back being my favourite song in years and Mr.Tweedy has taken his rightful place on the crowded pedestal with Bob,Neiler,Diego Armando and Roy the Boy.

Wilco.. Currently the best band on the planet. HAve been for a few years. Jeff Tweedy ... a songwriter up there with Dylan or whoever you care to mention, Nels Cline - The best guitarist I have heard in years, listen to his guitar playing on Kicking Television, the version of Ashes Of Americn Flags especially. The Village gig I just cannot wait for, it will be amazing, I have some bootlegs of Jeff from a couple of years ago and even listening to them on my MP3 the hair stands up on the back of my neck. can share with anyone who wants.

Haven't been a Cluas in a good while so nice to see a Wilco thread. For me, A Ghost is Born is their best record. However, it's also the first one I bought on CD so that might have something to do with it being my favorite. A friend made me a tape years ago of Summerteeth but I never really got into it, too keyboardy I thought *at the time*. (Maybe I should get in on CD?) I have Yankee Hotel Foxtrot and Being There too. As somebody else said, they all have individual charms. Everytime I listen AGIB I'm amazed at how good the songs are. It's like I forget that between listens or something. I could have done without that extended metallic drone before the last track though. I read somewhere that Jeff Tweedy said that's what he used to hear when he was having migranes. Reading the thread makes me eager to check out Kicking TV. When it came out I assumed it was just some kind of stop gap between albums.

Can't f**king believe how brilliant it is to see Jeff Tweedy is playing here, especially cos this conversation has kicked off a Wilco listening frenzy with me over the last couple of days. For an awful moment I thought it was clashing with my mother's massive 65th birthday & retirement party... How would I choose?! But its the next night thank god.

I saw them at the 930 club here in Washington last night and it was one of the best shows I ever saw (have seen them 5 or 6 times now). You can listen to an archive of the show here: http://www.npr.org/templates/story/story.php?storyId=6262709
