some all time (genuinely) alternative classic that i have never picked up or may never have heard of, new or old...
...i don't want post modest mouse / arcade fire american indie quirkyness...
...i don't want anything too difficult
...i don't want really loud guitars
...i do want something that i don't have to give 100% attention to via headphones and that the melodies and beauty will slowly and surely make their way into my head and i'll want to sing... it can't offend my family either... i want to be able to play it a lot
thank you

thanks lads... this is good... i don't know much about any of those three recommendations and having looked them up, they all interest me to varying degrees...
question for jules: jesus blood never failed me yet... there appears to be two versions... one is the more recent 74 minute epic culminating with tom waits input... the other seems to be a 1970's arrangement, 25 minutes in length based on the same loop by the same tramp... on that album, there is another 25 minute piece called the sinking of the titanic...
...where you coming from?

palace is quite the Neutral Milk Hotel aficionado already :)
Hm, I'm trying to think of slightly nonobvious things... that aren't too twee... I'm thinking kind of pastoral/folkish... Pentangle's Sweet Child maybe?

Prob not all that obscure but I used to love Remy Zero. Villa Elaine is a fantastic album, particularly the last song Goodbye Little World, and Gramarye.

yeah, Villa Elaine is a great album. They're only really good one I suppose.
Sun Kil Moon - Ghosts of the great/lost (can't remember) Highway is fantastic as well.

They were the bands band at the time. Courtney, Billy Corgan, Thom Yorke etc all used to rave on about the album.

thanks again all...
...neutral milk hotel - yes - a favourite of mine
...dera - possibly not looking for pastoral folk here (as much as i love it)... more inclined to be wanting a folk-pop gem that makes me feel warm inside and i don't feel like i need to concentrate too hard (i've enough albums that demand attention with not enough time)... i do know pentangle though
...una, mono i like but i'm not looking for post-rock...
...kozelek i know well
haven't heard of a few of the others - i'm off to check these out
