I have to completely disagree about the Aussie music scene which I think is just incredible, Dallas Crane, 78 Saab, Machine Translations, The Drones, Sarah Blasko, The Gin Club, Gelbison, Old Man River, The Sleepy Jackson, Dappled Cities Fly, You Am I, The Panda Band... Check them all out and then come back to me!
Unfortunately there is no comparison to the Irish scene, such is the high quality over in Australia, but things are definitely improving in Dublin.
I've checked them out and none of them particularly float my boat. Don't get me wrong , they are all soild bands but none of them really do anything new. They're good at what they do though. Another Aussie band along those lines are the mess hall. Great at what they do but just not very inspired. Gar's probably right in saying there's no point in comparison. I've probably got a bit of an ex pat chip on my shoulder about the whole thing

oh yeah i got confused by the fact that they want the public to "dig deep into their pockets" but then dont want to pay any tax.
my mistake.
no no, my mistake, the thread must be about band's financial ongoings rather than musical output
PQ
Well if we're judging them on their musical merits then no, no f**king way.
boy, zooropa, achtung baby, joshua tree ... please
*Some* good songs (I'll even concede great on a couple) on each of those albums but they absolute s**te outweighs the good stuff.
Pop = my favourite U2 album.

it's taken me 4 months to finally post on this site again after my big move to Hamburg. If anyone has time, check out the new ZooTV dvd. I was never a big fan, maybe because of all the cool Dublin heads constantly bashing them. Some of their material still sounds fresh now. Lets not even mention their live shows. Talk about taking something to another level. I defy anyone to check out the new zooTV DVD and NOT get goosebumps. f**king Duo with luo reed on a big TV screen singing "Satellite of love". But yeah, lets knock U2 and big up the indie cool who never get the break they deserve.
If some other unheard of Dublin(irish) band releasedd zooropa now they would be the new cool cluas cool. FACT (nevermind their other classic albums)
Also, I was in Berlin during the world cup at the fan mile where all the matches were being shown. During the day there was a U2 cover band on the main stage. It was a lovely sunny day, noboday around. After one or two tunes there was a huge crow everyone singing and dancing. I was looking around and felt so cool knowing that a Dublin based band could make waves felt around the world.
I think every Irish Musician and music lover should give U2 the respect they deserve.
It's ok to like U2, just don't tell your mates :-)
Peace and love cluas

Aside from times that it's been in the background I've never managed to sit through that album in one go without getting bored and switching it off.
WhoMe, it's nothing to do with being indie or "cool" (the computer degree I have means that ship sailed years ago) it's just that much of their material really bores me.

U2 are keeping it real! If they can't avoid Tax how else can Bono fly around the world lambasting us for not giving our taxed earnings to poor people in Africa.
Pop is a great album, Mofo has to be be the most under-rated song in recent times.

I totally agree with the comments about everyone on the site knowing bands or being in bands and how that could make it hard to get balanced opinion. However, seeing as POL is the one who threw the topic of worst band in Dublin out there I think POL should reveal what great band he (or she) is in.

i was a u2 fan around the time of unforgettable fire and the joshua tree... then i moved on into my own little indie and cool world... but... when achtung baby came out, i was temporarily transported back to my u2 world because it was such a good album... a definite departure and progressive move for them... funnily enough, zooropa bored me a bit and i headed back to hang out with my "too cool for school" crowd...
