...wonder which 'hysterical hounds of online hell' he's referring to: anyone here a hysterical hound? As for Jim Carroll's main points: he's right that it's ridiculous to rubbish an album before it's released. However, is criticism of a successful Irish act automatically 'begrudgery'?

Man, I'm sick of Jim Carroll. No doubt he was referring to the thread on here. Stop encouraging him.

I agree with Carroll. The slating of 9 is tantamount to begrudgery as no-one has heard the damn thing so what else could it be?

The song titles were enough reason for an arsekicking. "Coconut Skins"? "Me, My Yoke and I"? :-D

Ok, first off Jim Carroll has always said positive things about Cluas and I respect what he does with his writing and the choice music prize but when I read this I did think, 'shift in the mediasphere'. I cant remember whether it was Jim who wrote a recent piece about how 'People All Get Ready' was the greatest song that the Frames have written but never recorded but I did think at the time, 'bet that song is on the next frames album' ie: the piece seemed to be inspired by a press release, and hey presto it was. I suspect the same might be true here. I have a faint hunch that the song titles were leaked to see the reaction and when it was negative because, lets face it, those titles sound stoopido, the prs went into action. Personally I don't give ricecakes a kicking for the music he hasnt released, its the music he has which gets on my wick. One thing it does show, the cluas forum has clout out there, indeed the internet has become so important that the censorship of Google in China is major worldwide news and Peter Jackson was smart enough to harness it for his version of Lord of the Rings.

How about a truce or hiatus of damien rice talk until anyone actually hears the new album?Or will that be infringing on someone's very important (and I'm sure new) opinion of Mr. Cakes. Will that be so bad or is that like taking away the one thing that unifies a group of people and then they'll move on to some other poor sod

I originally posted that Rice thread because I thought that some posters here would be geniuely interested in knowing those snippets of infomation. But what has gone on since has become very boring indeed - the same opinions are being repeated several times and adding fuel to a thread that went down a pointless sidetrack. Now this one has cropped up. Surely there is more interesting stuff to talk about than the potential crapness of an album no-one here has yet heard.

One thing it does show, the cluas forum has real clout out there, and the old argument about the internet not being proper opinion making is bollocks too. Its become so important that the censorship of Google in China is major worldwide news and Peter Jackson was smart enough to harness it for his version of Lord of the Rings.
If Rice's album was entitled "Snakes on a motherf**king album" I guaruntee it'd be an internet sensation and become the highest selling album in history.

I'm embarraassed even reading this thread. Jules: you've a hunch that the song titles were leaked for a reaction? Are you joking? a guy who has sold 2 million copies of his previous album is highly unlikely to care about people's reaction to song titles. Most acts release tracklists in advance. All for a reaction?! Also, maybe it's just me, but the Ticket is part of a national newspaper, I find it odd that Jim Carroll would find that a Cluas discussion (and maybe a few others elsewhere) would really warrant an article. I'm not having a go at Cluas, I'm just saying that the article was very narrow in scope. The negative attitudes of a number of internet board users shouldn't really be of much interest to the general public surely?

yet, they appear to be, strange n'est pas ? Look, the kick off line was about the online negative reaction to the release of a track listing and the rest of the article is about that reaction and why it might be. More and more, articles in the national press are about what is going on online, the recent deluge about Sandi Thom and MySpace being a case in point.

i think we flatter ourselves greatly to think its just cluas which was having a kicking at ricecakes and hence inspired this piece - there has been loads of stuff online taking the mick out of the new album.

Yeah, I think people are getting lofty ideas of themselves. Rice leaking the song titles? Come on. A Press Release isn't leaking. As for people talking more about what is going online. Only bloggers talk about bloggers. Sandi Thom as previously mentioned, already had a contract and the whole internet thing was just a great piece of viral marketing.

Apparently, Ol' Miseryguts Rice has another new album in the pipeline according to Hot Press but I've got the exclusive details. It's called ';' and the tracklisting is as follows: 'Chickens' 'The Lettuce' 'The Headless Giraffes Were Gone' 'Me, My Scotch Egg And I' 'Unintentional Toddlers' 'Relax, Don't Wax' 'Aardvark' 'The Hornblower's Cousin Twice Removed' 'Unplayed Button Accordion' '11 Felonies' 'Tomato Seeds'

The funny thing is that even the people that hate Mr. Rice will now buy his album in order to slate it! Either way, he has won!
