I'd have thought that vast majority of people hold the charts in such low regard that they won't care about this.

Yep. I'd also imagine that you have to sell such a ridiculously low number of singles to chart in Ireland I wouldn't be surprised if this happens all the time.

About 2000 sales will get you a number one in Ireland

Which means that if you get your immediate family and friends to download the single you have a good chance of charting. By the same token, whoever was trying to manipulate in this case must have been very obvious in the methodology.

they should come out and apologise and promise never to do it again..then next time they release a single, do it again. and apologise again. and promise not to do it again and really reeeeallly mean it this time...then release another single and do it again. guaranteed worldwide exposure. in fact i'm going to start a band and do that. who's in?

During the midweek chart, St Julien were at number 11. In the days after that, over 500 singles were purchased, which if they went undetected would've put them into the top 10, possibly five. Some at chart-track thought the sudden sales were suspicious and discovered that 400 new accounts were opened up with each account using the same password. Each account also only purchased one song, St Julien. The band blamed an over enthuastic fan. IRMA accepted their side as data protection prevents them from seeing owned the credit card. But if were to happen again, a fine and ban from the charts for a length of time would be imposed.
