It'll be all Absolutely Kosher music, all the time (Except hopefully not those Frog Eyes re-issues that came out this year, I finally found some idiosyncratic Canadian indie I can't take.). Cory Brown will be able to retire on the back of the royalties coming in from Phantom.

Good luck to them. I used to work with an associated station years ago. Really nice guys :)

Ok, what would people think if Phantom continued with their playlists as they have been in the past? Would you want something more alternative or just less Irish s**te bludgeoning you to an aural MOR death? All I hope is that they don't succumb too much to the mainstream potholes that are so easy to fall into but so hard to get out of. And more professionallism :)

Spin made a balls of what? They set out to win the youth (15-24) market through a specific playlist format and a high volume of music per hour. They've done exactly that - in the last two JNLR books they've been the most listened to station in Dublin among that age group. They also now have more 15-24 year old listeners than Today FM (in Dublin, obviously). Doesn't strike me as having made a balls of anything, really! Anyway, as regards the Phantom playlist situation, let's just wait and see.

Do you actually listen to Spin? It is no different than FM104 or 98FM (who incidentally has a stake in it). I'm talking in terms of playlist. Before it was launched, they were sprouting nonsense about playing diverse music of a dance back ground etc. Spin applied for a 'dance' license, comparisons to BBC's radio 1 was bandied about. Yet the noise they play is about as dance as well, Now 54. So in that respect, they made a complete balls of what they said they were going to play. It is lowest common denominator stuff. Sure people listen to it but that is why I fear for Phantom Fm. To commercially viable you need to attract listeners. Spin FM quickly discovered that if they play mainstream stuff they'll get more listeners and thus abandoned their playlist.

Heh, without getting into details, yeah I am quite familiar with the station, trust me. If you want to hear the dance element, tune in late night and overnight... It's quite different to 104 and 98 in many many ways but maybe that's an argument for another day - let's not turn a celebratory Phantom thread into Spin -v- The People!

Spin is very different to 104 and 98 IMO in the terms of music it plays, but maybe my ears are wrong.

The dance element? The whole station was supposed to be dance orientated.

The licence awarded to Spin was advertised as a youth licence but got dubbed "the dance licence" because of the fashion of de time. And boxes. If you go onto their page on the BCI site this youth service style is described as "Hot Urban Contemporary". Phantom were awarded an alternative rock music licence as in... "The Broadcasting Commission of Ireland (BCI) today (November 1st) warmly welcomed the decision of the High Court regarding the award of the local radio licence for the Alternative Rock Music Service for Dublin City and County."

Signs not looking good, we were playlisted on the webstream for a few weeks a couple of months ago.
