When I was weighing up options for "The First Album To Change Your Life" thread I realised that virtully every artist I thought of was introduced to me via No Disco. My teenage years were spent in the musical wasteland of 1990's Athlone. Back then I was too young to get into clubs and the internet hadn't taken off in the midlands so the only way I could hear decent music was through the selections of Donal Dineen and to a lesser extent Uaneen Fitzsimmons. They introduced me indie bands that weren't Brit Pop; Radiohead, The Pixies, Beck, Eels, Pavement, Stereolab, The Flaming Lips, Sonic Youth, Spiritualised, The Breeders, Belle & Sebastian, Grandaddy, Primal Scream, Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds, PJ Harvey, The Stone Roses, Sigur Ros etc They inroduced me to hip-hop that wasn't sh*t; The Pharcyde, The Beastie Boys, DJ Shadow, Jurassic 5 etc And they introduced me to dance music that wasn't trance; The Chemical Brothers, Leftfield, Orbital, Tricky, Massive Attack, Bjork, Portishead, The Aphex Twin, Death in Vegas, David Holmes etc All in all I have to say that I owe them a great deal. Does anyone else feel similarly indebted to the show?

Hand on Heart ... Not as important as it should have been. It was on too late, so only saw it occasionally.

I remember being completely stunned after seeing 'I Break Horses' by Smog on No Disco when i was 16 or 17. I didn't know music like that existed!! But apart from that one time, it didn't have much effect. Nothing i wasn't already informed about by 120 Minutes/Alternative Nation on MTV. Not to say it wasn't a great show, but just not all that important to me.

Same as Mullys response - well not cause the lateness but yea didnt really see much of it. But I did see my mates vidjeo on it once - Connect Four Orchestra. Thought that was pretty legend. Around that time 120 minutes and Alternative Nation with Toby Aimes was my forte... and he was also one of my first big indie crushes....Ahhhh back in the day!

I really enjoyed No Disco and it defintely broadened my horizons musically. Though the biggest media affect on me would have bbc r1 late at night. Coming from cavan I could get crystal clear reception and I use to tape all the Annie Nightingale, The Breezeblock with Mary Ann Hobbs and later Here Comes The Night with Donal Dineen constantly. These affected my tastes more so than No Disco.

donal dineen no disco - very good at a certain kind of music uaneen fitzsimons (rip) no disco - much broader musical plate leagues no disco - killed it stone dead. too narrow and too scene-led. but then maybe i was older and was already finding out about stuff online ages before it featured on the show.

Your point about the internet is correct. Its much harder for a tv show to be cutting edge or to be the intorducer. Unless its got clout a lot it wont get the amount interviews and exclusives that are needed to impress. Still though there is probably space for a good irish scene tv show cross genres.

No Disco was a vital learning experience for me. I was suffering from being a U2 fan and although I probably watched it initially in the hope that there'd be some videos of Bono and the boys, it introduced me to a rake of bands that I now love. Seminal moments : The First Time I ever saw the video ' Speed to my Side ' by Rollerskate Skinny. I'd heard the song in the Screamadelica club and watched, mouth open, as Eamonn Sweeney threw DJ mixing shapes whilst playing it one night. Thanks to Uaneen, I realised that despite Mr Sweenys acrobatic scratching and knob twiddling, he wasn't doing anything... there really was that much going on in the song. The Video for Instant St that she always played. The announcment of the demise of A House and the video for ' Without Dreams ' that they made especially for it was a heartbreaker. The internet theory upstairs is an interesting one, and I also think No Disco came along just as MTV was winding down its 'Playing Music' policy. However, there's still room for it on the TV.

The Dineen years were a big Influence on CD buying at the time, David Gray ("A century ends" is still a great album), Spiritualised, Primal Scream, Stina Nordersturm, Paul Wellar, Pavement, Frames. Great Programme. Peter

Top of the Pops, MTV and radio programmes had more of an influence on me musically. To be honest, Beavis and Butthead probably shaped my tastes more that ND. No Disco was still a great programme though. BRING IT (or something like it) BACK!

I think Channel 6 are doing a really good job. It has the 'what will they play next' factor that Mtv had in the early 90s that keeps you watching.

you're right there Mully. Lots of irish content too, although they do tend to put things on a loop sometimes.

Channel 6 are doing a decent job at tapping into the Irish scene by playing videos from all types of acts. That reminds me.......anyone know who the girl is in the Republic Of Loose video for 'Break'?

Presenter seems lost. Why bother with a presenter? Ok, she got her gig in TV land, if thats what she wanted - fairplay to her. But she comes across as if she doesn't really know what shes talkin about. The show is playin some great videos though. It's almost weird to have a TV showing music videos again.

With you on Instant Street, dude. I'm getting goosebumps now just thinking about it. An absolute humdinger of a song but the video was just brilliant, brilliant, brilliant. Became obsessed with dEUS for a while because of that song/video. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oGTxfKaIoRI No Disco was a great programme and it introduced me to the following: the aforementioned dEUS, Stina Nordemstam, American Music Clun, Mum, Tycho Brahe and so on. Pity RTE f**ked it around in the schedules (always on too late) but as we all know RTE's ineptitude jnows no bounds. Uaneen RIP.

ah she's a ride, who cares about the rest, a nice filler betweeen the videos Fair play to Channel 6 though, actually can't believe their support of the Irish scene though the Irish music is often better than some of the international indie crap they play. Seen Ham Sandwich and Channel One last week, great songs
