Does it annony anybody else when really good albums are hampered by intro's, outro's, skits and voiceover's? Tons of hip-hop and rap albums have it with most not being funny or entertaining. But it's creeping into indie rock in the last few years too. Okay, we don't have the nine minute guitar intro that some 70's rock band would produce, but something as simple as the first track on the new album by Peter, Bjorn And John ruins the flow of the songs. Anybody ever pick up on any of this?

I agree with you Gar, some of these are dead annoying. Although, Pause For Porno on Dr Dre 2001 is hilarious. Some intro-y type stuff is good though, like Guru's chat on Jazzmatazz The most recent one that annoyed me is the alphabet song bookending the new Annie Mac compilation for Sunday Best.

One that bugs me a bit is the "Ostriches & Chirping" track on Elliott Smith's last one. Apparantly (i read) it's probably not even Elliott's work. Serves no purpose at all in the context of the album. It always reminds me that it's not the album he wouldve released himself. Wasnt there random untitled helicopter noises and radio buzz on (Whats the Story) Morning Glory? Twice! Why bother?

whilst i do agree that this happens, in some of the cases yous refer to, i'm sure these things serve a higher purpose... e.g. setting up the next track can't for the life of me remember if there were any random helicopter noises on that oasis album but if there were, i can see why they might have been there... similarly, i've this alt-country type album by a band called phosphorescent... on it there are 4 versions of the title track, all in and around a minute long, all done in different styles used to set up the next track... as an album tool, it's quite good... of course, there be some annoying stuff as well

If you could class music as useless album filler, how about all of that recent Sereena Manesh album apart from 'Drain Cosmetics'. What a complete and utter waste of money! Depressingly bad.

On 'Infernal Love', Therapy? got David Holmes (then little known) to do some links for the tracks. Works quite well, & a pretty brave step in 1995, to have Electronic music on a Rock album.

Filler I DO like (probably doesnt qualify as true filler though) is on Richmond Fontaine's "Post To Wire". Three or four little postcards read aloud with the same backing track. "Dear Pete...." Quite funny and endearing.

antistar, i know we've had this discussion about three times but i honestly can't see what drain cosmetics has that some of the other tracks don't... i loves candlelighted and sapphire eyes the most (the latter for the 30 second pop genius in the middle)... can't listen to the whole thing from beginning to end, mind...

You could be right. I bought the album and really persevered with it..but all I heard was a tuneless mess...I haven't given up yet though...maybe there are moments as you mentioned that I have overlooked.

And speaking of David Holmes, the interludes on "Lets Get Killed" are pretty cool.

And 'Bow Down To The Exit Sign' which has great interludes also...Holmes is a master of them.

Have to say this bugs me too. Republic of Loose have it on their album and it's just not funny. Very reminiscent of Eminem (maybe it's supposed to be ironic, but it's just annoying), and even my moniker's album had a piece I tended to just fast forward through. Seems to be a "style" issue these days. Coldplay's first was clearly rushed to market and had the same flaw - one of the 9 tracks was like, 12 seconds long?? ais.

BTW, can I add - another "style" thing - hidden tracks. Is it just me or are they just...so 1990s!!! :) ais.

Flip Yeah!! and so annoying on an mp3 player when you have something like 'Nevermind'. the last track is over twenty minutes and mostly silence. hopefully downloading will spell the end of that most annoying of gimmicks.

The original filler / interlude album was Ogden's Nutgone Fake by the frankly fantastic Small Faces. Side 2 is linked by a number of comedy skits about Happiness Stan, narrated in a kind of comedy Cockney by Stanley Unwin. Very unusual, but a truly great album. My favourite hidden track? It's on the Czars' The Ugly People vs The Beautiful people. Insert your CD, play the first track then hit rewind and you'll find a track hidden at the start of the album! Great tune too, featuring one of the more appropriate expletives in my music collection. I also have time for the comedy interludes on the Handsome Boy Modeling School's White People album. I frankly cannot listen to the Republic of Loose's debut because of the inane ramble in his fake American accent.

Annoying on cd, but in this day & age, mp3s can be sliced & diced handy enough.
