"poorly handled and marketed"??? thanks to this record company who "poorly handed and marketed" JJ72, the band sold over 500,000 copies of their debut album! I know many, many bands who would love to be that "poorly handled and marketed".
the problem with JJ72 was that after this very successful debut, they then went off and recorded one of the worst, most self-indulgent, piss-poor irish albums ever. not even ALL in the record labels in the world coming together could sell that one. the fault lies with the band, not the label - write some hits and then people will buy them. its so typical of idiot irish musicians to blame the labels for their own short-comings.
I shall say again that I To Sky is an epic classic that I keep coming back to.
In my opinion one of the top 10 Irish albums of all time

JJ72 splitting doesn't really surprise me. They kind of just exploded onto the scene, then totally lost momentum. A band I wanted to hate, but annoyingly were actually quite good, say what you like, they had some damn good, proper rock riffs. The lyrics were stupid, petulant and teenage (a reflection of their author?) but that was kinda part of the charm.
JJ72 RIP: Great riffs, crap live.

In honour of them splitting up I've just pulled out their debut and it's getting it's first spin in about 4 years. It's really not good.
It seems they overcame the obstacle of having a bassist who couldn't play by putting the bass REALLY low in the mix, interesting tactic for a 3 piece. I'm on track 5 and this is the first time I actually heard it. I presume Sarah Fox had to be far more capable.
I'm a bassist in the loosest sense of the the word but wow.

I immediately knew when I read the subject line of this email that there would be a huge backlash against the band.
Firstly, just to clarify I'm not a fan.
I think the reason there's such a mass intolerence against the JJ's is that they are, infact, one of the very very few Irish bands to really break out of this country and recieve acclaim abroad. Perhaps that acclaim is undeserved, perhaps not, that at this point is irrelevant, but it was attained all the same. It's typical begrudgery perhaps fueled by the unfounded success they were attracting.
For a while, and quite suddenly, JJ72 were one of the most important bands in Ireland, and were gaining steady success over the water. It's very easy to begrudge success, and the JJ's didnt really have the material (imo) or the mainstream hype behind them to sustain it.
I think it's a shame they've broken up. It's sort of like someone losing their job for reasons that are totally out of their control. I wouldnt wish that on anyone.
Music isn't a competative sport and they weren't doing any harm by doing what they were doing, like them or not.

Just a thought...Irish band, success abroad, national begrudgery.......
Anyone else think we're going to see history repeat itself with the Thrills?

It's not begrudgery. This accuastion comes up every single time a large group of people dislike a band.
"Typical Irish, begruding etc." It's such a tired cliche and a predictable reaction.
Some people liked them, some people thought they were crap. Whether they are Irish or not has no relevance.
"We crafted two monuments of magnificence for the future aural pleasure and pain of all would be JJ believers and doubters....and for those who care not for the passing of the petulant yet powerful pup....shame on you!"
That statement is enough for the whole country to hate them

obviously several hundred thousand people in other countries didn't think they were that 's**t' if they bought the record.
The ire directed towards them always bemused me. Especially because all most people could come up is "his voice is annoying" "they are annoying" "they are arrogant" etc, and stuff of that flavour. Hmm, dunno. Whatever, nevermind.

i think, una, that u have already provided the best reason why people didnt like them - "they were pretty".
it will make a great epitaph for them - JJ72 "they were pretty".
case closed.
