I was channel surfing the other day when the the film Road Trip popped up on one of the channels. I would have kept flicking except for the fact that the scene in question was cut to Lovin Machine by Jon Spencer Blues Explosion. Puzzled but pleased I switched over but when I mentioned it to a fellow Blues Explosion fan the next day he informed me that he'd watched the whole film and that Ween, Eels Supergrass and Ash had also appeared on the film's soundtrack. I was pretty taken aback by this as I'm used to these teen comedys being, filled with dodgy American Punk/Ska pop. The same friend than reccomended the abysmal Girl Next Door film on the basis that it featured some of the best music he'd ever heard in a film. I was fairly suspicious of his claim but I rented out the DVD and sure enough David Bowie, Elliott Smith, Echo & The Bunnymen, Thunderclap Newman, Dilated Peoples, Red House Painters, Looper, Mogwai, The Who, Donovan, Josh Rouse, Ralph Myerz & The Jack Herren Band, Harry Nilsson, Fantastic Plastic Machine, Pepe Deluxe, Marvin Gaye and Muddy Waters all soundtracked various stages of the film. I'm pretty taken aback. I'm tempted to pick up the American Pie box set from HMV in the hope that I'll be treated to a wealth of indie gems. What's going on here?

Heard The Shins - Saint Simon in the background on Fair City one boring evening. Not a bad film but a bad TV programme so it kind of counts.

That film's got a great soundtrack. As well as Jeff you get Looper, Radiohead, Sigur Rós, The Chemical Brothers, The Beach Boys, The Rolling Stones, Red House Painters, Spiritualized, Bob Dylan, Underworld, R.E.M., Leftfield, Thievary Corporation, Josh Rouse....

"Keeping Mum": dodgy Rowan Atkinson comedy with gorgeous soundtrack by d**kon Hinchliffe (Tindersticks) and "Soft Hand" by the great Willard Grant Conspiracy is in "Stuck on You" (that Farrelly brothers film about conjoined twins that sounded so wretched I couldn't bring myself to go see it even though I love WGC)

NOOO!!! : D I can't believe that got edited - it's his name! d**kon. c'mon... It's a great name! Like yer man in the Secret Garden who made everything grow. Mr d**kon Hinchliffe. Composer. Violinist. Arranger. Tinderstick. Some people/computers have just got bad minds... (and it changes my capital D to a little 'un. tsk)

That's the only tune that I know by Willard Grant Conspiracy but I love it. Has anyone heard any of their other stuff or could they make any recomendations?

Yeah, I know, swear filter is a bit strict that way, it can't distinguish between the "family friendly" and "post-watershed" usage of those letters.

oh well, Mr Hinchliffe then. He's great. As for Willard Grant - can't go wrong with them..their frontman Robert Fisher is like some modern prophet; has a voice to make the back of your neck go all tingly. Most recent album is called 'Let it Roll' and has the best opening note of an opening song I've ever heard. Great album - standout tracks are 'Skeleton' & 'Flying Low' ('Flying Low' is also the name of an earlier, terrific album, but this is a new song) Also their last album 'Regard the End' was a masterpiece altogether... I like seeing them live a little less these days since their old guitarist Simon Alpin has been replaced by an annoying grandstander called Jason something...he hogs the spotlight with screaming guitar solos that sit uncomfortably with the collective nature of the WGC enterprise. One more thing - 'Soft Hand' is not really typical of their output, being a very poppy upbeat gambol in the park - most of their songs are murder/suicide/alcoholism ballads. But death never sounded so good..

ps WGC, like Tindersticks, have a terrific violinist, Josh Hillman. And what is it about men with violins that makes 'em all so damn attractive? : )

Vanilla Sky is a s**t movie. Not as bad as Gothica though, which I watched last night. CHEESEFEST. I love the Waynes World soundtrack and the Reality Bites one too, and of course Almost Famous. There's some new straight to DVD rocky flick out at the mo with Drea Di Matteo - anyone seen it? I think it's called Prey or something.

I had the misfortune of seeing Along Came Polly and was a bit miffed to hear "Lost Cause" by Beck playing as Mr.Stiller packs up his stuff & moves out, post-break up. Bit literal, wouldnt ya say?
