Most mainstream 'indie' stations like XFm and that are pretty rubbish during the day - playing the same songs off a playlist like any other station, except instead of girls aloud you get the kaiser chiefs. I wouldn't hold any great hopes for Phantom to upset the apple cart in that regard but if they cater for their niche markets, say with interesting programmes in the evening, that would be of value and of interest.

ALTHOUGH: Heuson, Fanning and Battle were the only ones who played new Irish indie to any degree. Now that they're gone, I guess Phantom will take over in that department.

Those 3 very rarely, if ever, play any unsigned Irish acts.

Awful decisions indeed. I would query, however, the extent to which the schedule re-think is about
a) shortsightedness of the management
or
b) A practical acknowledgement of that most hideous of creatures: the audience "demographic".
Logic would dictate it's about the latter. Either way, what the action says about RTE's role as a "public service broadcaster" as opposed to a station dedicated to providing "entertainment" is hideous to the extreme.

why do rte usually get it wrong? Then, just when your starting to get to know the schedule off by heart (and know what time you want to tune in) they go and change it. I actually schedule my life around when the good radio is on.
any idea whats happinin to dan hegarty?

I remember way back when in the pirate days people told us we had sold out, then when we got the temporary licence we were told we had sold out and Im sure some people will be the same come August when we go on air full time. Just goes with the territory really. Wish I had the car to match the sell-out status. Yep, as people rightly point out, Phantom will be a business venture and has to build itself an audience to survive.
However, Im confident that Phantom can maintain its ethos and its committment to play new music and unsigned acts. For one, its in our contract and more importantly than that, its what we want to do!
As has always been the way, sending in music to Phantom is encouraged. Include biog info and a contact number and bop it off to us. John Caddell is our music director. Send it to: Phantom FM, 12 Camden Row, Dublin 8. If its good, it will get played and if its bad it gets recycled :)
Just on the 2FM stuff, as far as I know Jenny and Dan are still staying on the Midnight - 2am slot, just not included in the press release.

fanning hasnt played new irish indie music this century - u, like most of the rest of the country, still think of him the way he was rather than the presenter of the worst radio show around

alright, well JK to me anyway is one of the best people at what he does in the country, probably not saying much to be quite honest there, but I just liked the idea that you could tune into a radio programme, not knowing what you were going to hear, but yet know that it would be good, if you knwo what I mean. |

The national broadcaster don't respond well to public opinion I'm afraid so this petition is doomed. However, RTE are considering a new Radio Licence (as well as a Digital tranmission) so they may well have a strong Arts emphasis on either of these new channels and leave Radio 1 to the housewives.
I'm actaully quite impressed with the output of RTE television at the moment. The run up to the Rising commemerations was particularly abundant with excellent documentaries, the World Cup coverage has been great and Christ, they're doing even the travelling DIY, Cook it yourself from a skip, Dress up a murder scene and makeover my ugly dog type shows with style.
Right back at you TV3

Yes. World Cup coverage is second to none. The panel back in the studio are outstanding. No platitudes or vacuous bullsh*t. It is rare hear someone's bona-fide actual opinion and not some ambiguous response that attempts to please everyone.
