Can Jamie Foxx do an interview WITHOUT singing and "doing" Ray please? "Golddigger" was a national anthem in America was it? Pshaw.
Liked Jenny Lewis song but was her guitar totally out of tune or what? Zutons are starting to annoy me. I dont like looking at the singer when he sings. Looks like an angry turnip.

No, not at all, they've got a Mercury Nomination under their belts so obviously they're taken seriously. I just don't care for their music, I know I don't care for their music, wasn't particularly interested in hearing if they had undergone a massive jump in quality (and having heard the single on the radio was pretty confident that they hadn't) but that doesn't mean I can't have a crush on one of their members.
If they were concerned about little 'ol me taking them seriously the thing to do would be to jack in the irksome scally psychedelica and making some decent music instead.

Ok, school boy sniggering aside, lets have a quick look at the pop charts and ask ourselves when it comes to todays female acts, what is more important, musicianship or sex appeal, and before you throw up your hand in horror, let me just remind you that good looks/sex appeal has long played a key role in the popularity of male rock and pop stars eg: Elvis, Mick Jagger, David Bowie and Westlife to name a few. In fact, the vary term "rock 'n' roll" is slang for sex. So, here are a few very successful female acts appearing in the present IRMA irish charts.
Pu**ycat Dolls (hmm, censored by the systen software, interesting)
Madonna
Britney Spears
Katie Melua
All of them, to a varying extent, have used their looks and/or sexuality as a key part of their act (just as have male musicians). In the last number of years, I would say that,yes, your looks have become a key ingredient in selling you to an audience, and in some cases is a more important factor than your musical ability, and that is not confined to pop, the same is true of Jazz (Victoria Tolstory, Norah Jones) and Classical (Anne Sophie Mutter). There are a lot of fine musicians out there but to suggest that looks don't play a part in getting ahead in music (whether male or female), is naive. Would Abi Harding be playng sax in the Zutons if she weighed 20 stone and looked like a bag of hammers ? Don't think so, but she might get into The Magic Numbers. |

THanks for your IRMA list Jules but I don't need it pointed out to me that if your female in music you have no choice but to expolit your sexuality to get anywhere - Basically if you don't come across as sexually agressive or sassy (from pu**ycat Dolls to Courtney Love et al) or demure (from Gemma Hayes to Isobel Cambell) - if you don't fit in a a category of 'sex sells so sell it' then there is no place for you. How many ugly, balding, overweight men can you name in music today - there's a shedload. Of course sex appeal has played a role in some men's careers but it is by no means a requirement to be taken seriously. There are lots of guys that have absolutely no sex appeal that can exist in whatever genre they've chosen. They are there because they make music not because they are selling a notion of sex. Why is it not possible for women to occupy that same space?
It's a male dominated industry and your comment about Abbi's weight and that charmimg comment about the Magic Numbers proves my point perfectly. It's sexist, it's derogatory and it's completely outdated. The attitude that you've displayed amounts to 'listen love, don't get your knickers in a knot, that's the way life is and there's no point stressing over it'. And you're saying I'm being naive?! HA!

Just look at the cover of the new issue of NME to back that point up - it is meant to be an issue all about rock n' roll heroes but there is not one female musician on the cover. Not that it overly matters in that kind of publication but it proves how much higher male rockstars are than female.
