I don't like this place, it's full of people that scare me. A truly atrocious band.

Thats a bit rich considering that one of your top ten albums of 2005 was 'Bloc Party'

Oh dear, it's not the 1st of April is it?
Are you seriously saying what you I think you are saying? I like Irish bands as much as the next guy and there at least half a dozen of them that deserve a great deal more attention that ROL. Michael Knight, Delorentos, The Immediate and God Is An Astronaut spring to mind. But, if you seriously think that ROL deserve to be on the same page as Bloc Party then there's no hope.
It's only my opinion though, ROL are truly atrocious - the new Aslan perhaps.

No, I'm simply saying that anyone who thinks that Bloc Party are up there needs to take a serious look at their critical faculties.

Now, to be fair to you Reverend - and I think postings will show, we often concur - I think you're overstepping the mark there. The fact that the guy/girl likes Bloc Party but doesn't like the Republic of Loose is not exactly a runner. It lacks the serenity of the Reverend. Each to their own now, surely, my brethren?
Personally speaking, I don't like either.

...plus, there are a lot more scarier things in the world than Republic of Loose fans (Indiecater).
New topic, I think: what's scary about Cluas?

I must admit, I haven't had decent waves in a while and its making me ornery as a rattlesnake in disused washing machine in the desert so prehaps, yes, I may have pulled a sixgun a little soon, cos I'm tired, I'm f*cked, I'm in bits, but goddamn it, ROL are a travelling preacher show and Ah just gotta stick up for them fellers once in a while boys, goddamn, can I get a witness ?
On an unrelated topic, just checked out 'We Shall Overcome' by the Boss, best funny moment on it, 'Froggie Went A Courtin', uh huh. Its like an SNL parody of The Boss

I reckon that all in all Bloc Party probably wasn't one of the top ten albums of last year but I would put it in my top twenty. As for Republic of Loose, I bought the last album and I thought they sounded like a poor man's version of Alabama 3. The singles from the new album would indicate that their latest offering is even worse than their debut. What I've heard so far has reminded me of crass American rap-rock like Crazytown, lame white boy funk like Maroon 5 and really poor R&B like Another Level. But considering the band themselves list Bobby Brown as an influence and they've being known to cover R Kelly songs I suppose it's as good as can be expected.

Bloc Party are f**king brilliant in my opinion.
Republic of Loose are one of only a few decent Irish bands around. To be honest, I don't rate many Irish bands really (and I suppose you can define 'Irish' as a band that is only popular in its local area, otherwise, geography is irrelevent), but I really think they have something to offer.
Stroller, R Kelly is a legend.

I'm a big fan of Bloc Party too, and I consider their Remix Album to be a very bold and adventurous release. It's slightly patchy in parts, but always interesting.
I'm sitting with the jury on the fence about the Republic of Loose. I keep thinking novelty, yet, I keep tapping my feet. I would like to see where their heading and hear a little more to be honest, but one things for sure, calling them a poor mans Alabama 3 is quite the insult!!

I'm sorry I don't get this off beam comparison with Alabama 3, there is no relationship. Alabama 3 are inspired by singer songwriters like Woody Guthrie, John Prine and Johnny Cash. ROL's 2nd disc has overtones of Bodycount, Dr Dre and Pharrell, there is no crossover.
Now, if you want a good example of how to use the 'poor mans version of' in a sentence then, "Franz Ferdinand are a poor man's version of The Knack'

The problem really here folks is the typical backlash of success in Ireland!
dont rate republic of loose that much but due to recent chart success they are gonna have to deal with the begrudgers who think that their favourite band should be up there!
I think R of L have made a conscious choice to go commercial and it has worked for them.
the guys have tried for many years to make it in the music business so just let them have thier moment.
We've become better in Ireland at least in being prepared to support our own which I dont think is a bad thing!
Can R of L capatilise upon on an international stage? that remains to be seen.

"a conscious choice to go commercial" - eh, maybe they're just trying to make the best music they can. Good music is commercial, don't you just hate that?

I'd disagree with that to some extent, all good music deserves commerical success whether or not it sounds commercial. Not all commercial sounding music deserves success as some (much?) of it is s**te. Ultimately though it doesn't matter what anyone else thinks, if a band is truely making the music that they want to make then fair play to them. If they're compromising their art for commercial reasons and can live with that then fair enough, if they can't then they're beating themselves up more than anyone here could.
