I can't keep quiet about it anymore. I think Flaming Lips are the most boring band on the planet. Even writing their name gives me a dull headache and a cold shiver, the sort I usually get when Pink Floyd, the Lord of the Rings trilogy (book and films), the Star Wars Sexology or Monty Python is mentioned. They try so hard to be interesting, with the silly album titles, animal suits and puppets. Even their leader, Wayne Coyne, looks boring, more like a lecturer in woodwork at a North of England polytechnic than a rocker. Oh god, everytime I see his beardy, gormless face I want to hit it with a large wrench.

If you did it on stage he probably wouldn't mind. He usually covers himself in fake blood at gigs.

Ah c'mon the lips aren't so bad.They've made at least two very good
albums(soft bulletin & yoshimi,haven't heard the new one).They're a
kind of throwback to seventies prog pop(E.L.O.& cat stevens)with some
modern digital studio gadgety stuff.Lyrically Wayne Coyne is pretty good
& he sings a bit like Neil Young.Leave 'em alone they're o.k.
Also don't be dissing pink floyd.Great,Great Band.
I do agree with you about Star Wars and Lord of the Rings.
Totally overated,utter garbage.

While I agree with you that I too get dull headache and a cold shiver whenever anyone mentions the Rings, and especially Python,
surely the most overrated comedy act in history, you are deeply wrong about the Lips.A great,singular, continually inventive band that have a true distinctive sound of their own.Wayne Coyne is probably the most down-to-earth and ego-free frontman out there. They're impossible to dislike. |

I think Rev Jules just proved the possibility of disliking them.... I like the Lips, but agree they're critically over-rated. Any band that comes out with a song like "Do You Realize" has a place in my heart tho.
And as for Python! Their influence on comedy cant be underestimated. I suppose it's like talking about the Beatles in a way....but you dont gotta like em! There's no accounting for taste. Adam Sandler is a millionaire after all.

Anyone who has heard the latest album will seriously disagree that comment Jules. I genuinely believe that their madness is completely natural. But crucialy, I also belive they've created some cracking tunes, particularly ' Haven't got a clue' on the new record. The world needs the lips...

Jules, I'm worried for you. Not liking the creative showmanship of Wayne Coyle, the inspiring imagination of J.R.R. Tolkien and Peter Jackson, the comic genius of Monty Python and the brilliant first three Star Wars classics, something is wrong there.

So the moral of the story is, you can always find a criticto agree with your tastes.
The Ticket gave it five stars. I haven't heard it yet but when I do I'll post a review that I agree with.

I can't understand the fuss made about this band either. Their kookiness seems put on and they seem very short on interesting ideas.
I bought Soft Bulletin on the strength of 'Race for the Prize', but everything else on the album seemed to lack then energy and imagination of that track.

WHAT?
You sound like you've made up your mind but I'd advise you to go and get a copy of their videos (which was released last year) and watch the videos while listening to the commentary at the same time - you won't be able to help but change your mind.
As far as i'm concerned no recent band from the US is more pro-music, pro-other bands, pro independent projects and creative ideas than the lips (check out their myspace page where they are always doing stuff to support charities, new bands, musicians, film projects) They seem like genuinely great guys.
Also I recently had the great great pleasure of seeing Wayne Coyne walk down Sixth Street in Austin Texas at SXSW IN A BUBBLE - I was queuing to get into their gig which they did in a venue a bit smaller than the village. The gig was excellent (I managed to get in) Coyne was at his best, it was recorded live for BBC 1 and the energy of the band and the crowd was phenomenal. I just can't even explain how with the band the crowd were.

the flaming lips! they're fun. race for the prize is amazing, the only time i saw them do a full set was one of those gigs where you can't get the smile of your face the whole way through. wayne waved at me during 'do you realize' i swear!
anyway i wouldn't like to get so worked up with hating a band y'know...even truly s**t bands. big respect to the flaming lips for making people everywhere happy! same goes for the polyphonic spree, super furries, warlords of pez and all those other giants of rock with a sense of humour and cool clothes.

Rev - If the Lips are boring, who is interesting in your opinion?
I'm not a massive fan but I reckon they are one of the most creative bands around at the moment. Seeing them live at Oxyegen a while back was an experience.
