una, that was a bit of a joke... sure, we'll all loved arcade fire before the next person... look, i like prince - he would ruin the vibe... big bands are not needed, just f**kin' excellent ones so we can all be snobby together

I bet I knew them first. I knew Arcade Fire when they were in utero.

Oh dear God no. If you want noise then go with Lightning Bolt.
More than one way to skin a cat. LB are great, but there are plenty of others.

There's no bordering about it! Palace, you can't expect a festival to revolve completely around your personal tastes. If there were no big name acts, they wouldn't sell any tickets. There has to be a balance between commercial and critical interests. And besides, what harm if people come just to see one act - they might be turned on to a few less famous bands, or is that what you're afraid of?

You dudes are all so snooty! Still, I'd have to agree with yee. But, would Prince playing be such a bad thing? Like, the only people I know who like Prince are big big music fans. If you say Prince to anyone who isn't mad for music, generally the reaction you get is one of bemusement, usually followed by a comment like "yeah, he had his ribs taken out so he could......." I don't think having Prince on the bill would lead to swarms of Flannery's frequenters descending on Laois.

Oh, The Streets, s**t but you know it. Prince, saw him play the RDS years ago, he was middling live (sorry, but its true) Ryan Adams, I'd rather stab hot forks in my ears than listen to him.

s**t, i better defend myself... ...of course ou need commercially viable acts to play but there's a fine balance... lets take last year - nick cave, arcade fire, kraftwerk, flaming lips - these are all acts that can be considered big without being behemoths of pulling power... anyone who appreciates a certain kind of music (i.e. contemporary slightly left-field) would give these artists the respect they deserve and be genuinely interested in seeing them.... prince does not fit in to this category - he will bring a swarm of his own fans, some who admittedly will be in to the rest of the festival, others who i guarantee will not - there are a lot of prince fans who are the non-frequent once a year gig going types... ...i aint tryin' to be a music snob / controversial / in to my own opinion... i'm just saying what i believe would work best for the festival - there's only 25,000 a day - this isn't glastonbury

"Hmm, that JJ72 'joke' is a bit missfired - have you seen any of their recent gigs? Or even the gig at EP last year? Or, perhaps tracks from the new album? Hardly a 'comedy act'. Then again, slagging them seems to be a national sport, so it would be a shame to see that discontinue...right?" ...........tumbleweed........................................ Its ok Una, was just a joke. And yes, they are a "comdey act", just not a funny one

A national sport? JJ72 would be delighted if that was true

So what is the point then? This particular discussion board just seems to be a general rant anyway. If your'e looking for a point, check out the Spire on O'Connell St.

What has the Spire on O'Connell Street got to do with Prince?

I just don't want Prince to play because I'm not a particularly big fan.

I disagree. EP is as much about the breakdown of the borders between big and small bands as it is having the 'f**kin' excellent ones'. I'd love to the see the purple one there, if you know what I mean ;-) My hate list : White Stripes Kings of Leon Arctic Monkeys Libertines Pete Donkerty Jack Johnston Goldfrapp My Wish List : Seelenluft Notwist Tiga Le Tigre Ulrich Schnauss Ladytron Cut Copy The Knife Bang Bang Couse and the Impossible Vitalic Pulp Yo La Tengo LCD Soundsystem Lindstrom Erlend Oye Nurse with Wound Jape

Impeccable wish-list.Thta's the sort of line-up I'm on about. Ulrich Schnauss is a genius, he's playing Sugar Club April 1- but he ain't no fool (sorry!!)
