Is it just me or does Rufus Wainwright sound completely pissed when he sings? Not just on the show, but all the time. Very slurred singing. It diverts my attention from his songs.

i was at the recording of that episode of other voices and julie feeney just seemed crippled by nerves. a mate and i had a wee chat with her over in the pub afterwards and she knew in herself that the whole thing hadn't gone to plan. she was sharing the bill that night with rufus, martha and james blunt and the sense of occasion just seemed to render her a wee bit overawed
the jury's still out for me in terms of her music but i wouldn't mind seeing her do her own set in the sugar club or someplace like that to really see what she's made of

I suppose it was a big gig for her and being nervous makes sense. I actually really enjoyed her songs shown on Other Voices though and didn't realise the nerves.
Is she playing the Sugar Club?

Rufus Wainright is probably the most overrated singer-songwriter on the planet right now. His songs are poorly-focused, tuneless affairs that simply go nowhere. He's nowhere near as good as he himself thinks he is. If he didn't have songs about fancying his (male) art-teacher at school and was not the son of Loudon and Anne would he be receiving as much attention? Doubt it. Martha is much better and it is she who has really inherited the songwriting genes. Plus the interview he gave was dire indeed.

I had never heard Rufus before and I thought he had a great voice. There are many more overrated singer-songwriter's on the planet.

On an Other Voices note who was the dude a few weeks back who sang "She Moves in Mysterious Ways?" Well, i think that's what the song was called as those lyrics were in the chorus.
Not the U2 version, naturally.

I totally agree with you about Rufus Wainwright...I don't get it at all and there's people out there that think he's a genius songwriter. My 5 year old nephew farting into a bottle would make a nicer sound...have we not had enough whiney "poor me" songs to last us a jaysus lifetime?? And as for that effort about the art teacher.....WTF? Saw him perform that on Newsnight a few weeks back and thought it was a piss take....like seriously SHUDDUP !!

I think the problem with Julie Feeney playing live is that she doesn't play any of the instruments on her album, nor does she write any of the instrument parts. I think it would be a lot more effective if the musicians who have produced her album support her on stage.

Some of the interviews are excrutiating. Did anyone see Liam O'Maonlai interviewed on the side of a cliff? The one where he grabbed Kelly's arm in a vice-like grip and started catterwauling some olde Irish dirge, all eyes closed in earnestness, into Kelly's earhole? Did you see Kelly squirm? Did you see him not knowing where to look? Televisual gold!! They rightly ripped the piss out of it subsequently on Blizzard of Odd....
True story, Liam and The Flowers were once rehearsing in blackrock, during their glory days. It was summer, a fine sunny day, they were outside in someone's back garden, Liam decided to take his shoes off and feel the vibes of mother earth through the bare soles of his feet, anyway mother earth must have been vibing out that day, because liam became so immersed with the energy of the earth and the universe that, mid song, he dropped the mike and made a run for it out the side gate and down the street at full tilt, he made it all the way to Ranelagh before the lads caught up with him and when they did, he said he had been overcome by the power and magic of the energy of the earth...it isnt an act, he really is that hippy dippy.

Folks we should start a "mad O'Maonlai" thread because I have heard a few over the years, none of which I can remember. No disrepect to the man, in fact one of my favourite gigs of all time was the HHF in the Boxing Club in Drogheda about 20 years ago, but he is mad!!! Did you see the green druids outfit on the Late Late when he was promoting the solo album.

Dear dear. The Art Teacher is about a woman. And his mother's name is Kate McGarrigle. Her sister is Anna. Tsk!
I think he's deadly.

I'm deeply, deeply sorry for getting the gender of the object of his affections and the name of his mother so dreadfully wrong.I apologise forthwith for any offence that may have been caused.
