No its not the idea, in my opinion music should be brought forward, not back, copying someone else's "look" is pathetic, as is blatantly copying their music, where's the originality? I'd rather go see a covers band than go see The Thinkzzzzzzz

Name one band making truly (and I mean truly, as in brand new, never heard before) music? There is no 'original' music left to make. People can only combine elements of something that has already been done and try to put a new slant on it. Ideally this should result in something interesting, exciting and inspiring. Personally, I don't find the likes of BellX 1 in anyway exciting - but that's personal taste. I don't need to slate them, I just won't be buying their records or attending their gigs. I'd prefer to go to a gig where the band ethos is blood, sweat and tears, where they fully appreicate that you are there and want to take you on a journey (even if it's a scary one at times lol!!) drag you into their madness leaving you with your ears ringing, grinning like the proverbial cat - which I have done everytime I've seen them play.

benni - nah thats something else, not sure if he still has the e-mag going,
the things are definitely worth seeing live, even just to make up your mind. good tight rythm section, and always an opportunity to wiggle your leg, which is a good thing.
oh dromed, i think the beta band we're pretty original, i hadn't heard anything quite like them before anyways.

Probably the only really original artist I've heard in recent times (taking in the last 10 years etc) is Bjork... I dont think there is anything wrong with being directly influenced by other bands its always gonna happen - as long as its brought somewhere else and expanded as opposed to just being blatantly ripped off.

Max Tundra, Menomena and Solex are pretty unique, but you're right, even seemingly "out there" music draws its influence from somwhere, no-one starts from ground zero (although some have tried by attempting to rewrite the mathematical and tonal basis of western music theory from scratch).
What is important is that you move things forward in some small way, either by building innovation on top of innovation (e.g. New Order taking Kraftwerks influence) or taking something well established and refining it by just doing it very, very well. The jury is still out on The Things in both regards I think, but they can't be accused of not trying.

"There is no 'original' music left to make." cmon mate, thats a bit short sighted to be honest. I hope for everyones sake that not all true musicians and song writers think this way. Compare a piece of classical music and say "god save the queen" or "Blue Monday" or whatever thats relevant now. Im glad people didnt have your view back in the day or nothing would have changed, there is always going to be something new and far away

Blue Monday and God save the queen are actually fairly straightforward pieces of music, its just been a slow evolution to get to that point. I think the point about "no original music" is more a recognition of the idea that people rarely pull ideas out of thin air, it all comes from somwhere, in fact in that sense you could say that there has NEVER been truly original music since people first started banging on rocks or whatever, its just more obvious to us now with the abundance of recorded material we now have access too. For example "God save the Queen" can trace its roots back to 60s garage via New York Dolls, Blue Mondays owes a debt to Krafterk and the newly emerging post-disco dance music of the time, even many classical pieces are based on reworked folk music.

Yeah i know music has evolved slowly. My point is though it was still a pretty silly comment to make. I know there wasnt a sudden jump from Mozart to New Order im sure the cool dudes of back in the day could never of perceived music like ours nowadays while they were knocking back the cheap wine and getting jiggy with the Strings section. What im saying is Music in 100 years will hopefully seem like just another huge leap forward in comparison but not with closed minds and not with comments like "there is no original music left to make"

WhoMe cool your jets. The point wasn't there is nothing original left to make therefore music is dead. Binokular gets the point I was making in that there is no such thing as an original 'sound' anymore, everything stems from something so it's not 'original'. However, the crux of my point was that was is interesting, is how people interpret sounds that have already been made and give them a newer sound, a modernising shakeup, a refreshment, whatever. Most music fans listen to a broad range of genres, and those who go on to make their own can come up with really interesting music, based (whether consciously or not) on their own musical 'experiences'. Which brings me back to my original point - in response to the Things getting slagged for making music that sounds like X, Y or Z. You can't write off a band cos they sound like someone else, everyone sounds like someone/something in some manner.
Maybe that's a new game we can invent. Name a band that you think are 100% uninfluenced by any other music/artists and we can see if we can disprove the theory!
As for making music with dead fish......Yoko Ono did that first lol!!
