Hi all,
I have just launched a new website - http://www.irishrockers.com
The site has a database of well over 100 of the biggest Irish rock artists. The reader can enter comments on the page for each band, so feel free to get it started and add your comments about your favorite Irish musicians. It's likely I've missed a few important ones so let me know if you notice any major ones that I've missed.
thanks,
Aidan

...and a sit down! ooh lovely!
Anyway, you forgot The Plague Monkeys and 9 Wassies from Bainne (I think thats what they were called, possibly the best non-trad Irish language band ever?)
Looking through the list, Puppy Love Bomb, vaguely remember them from the Dave Fanning show many years ago (about 9 years ago I think). Any more info on them? Anyone remember if they were actually any good? I do remember kinda liking one of their tunes at the time, but can't remember a single thing about them now.

Puppy Love Bomb line-up? Well Alan Cullivan was a member of them as well (bass player if I am not mistaken) and he is now managing the Thrills and Humanzi.

The primary focus is rock music (and that's a very broad category these days) but I try to be as inclusive as possible. Sure Enya and The Corrs are not really what you would call rock but they make interesting music that would be of interest to many rock fans. Damien Rice and Sinead Lohan definately are rock in my book. Where I draw the line is the with the likes of Westlife, Boyzone etc. which clearly do not belong in the rock category.

Would Damo not qualify in some "ive got an irish aunt so I can play for Ireland" rule due to his time in Juniper as Dodi Ma?

Damien Rice sure sounded like rock to me when I saw him in concert with The Frames with his acoustic guitar all fuzzed up and jumping around the stage like a madman. Of course he did a lot of his usual mellow stuff too, and can't rock be mellow?
The question is then what is rock? As Van the cranky old man once said - "I never knew what Rock was. I still don't. I know what Rock 'n' Roll is, but I don't know what rock is."

Great quote that, "Rock" is a weird thing, no-one really knows what the hell it is (a section in Virgin Megastore?) Soft mettalers Bon Jovi are "Rock" but they ain't Rock'N'Roll, for that you need to look to Mr. Bo Diddley. Apparently his original albums are getting reissued this month too.

I dunno Jules, pretty much anything can be "rock" depending on your definition, its such widely used and misused word. Its like "pop", "pop" can mean stuff like Westlife (which arguably is too slow, uncatchy and lacking in hooks to be pop according to my aesthetic), pop can mean stuff thats actually popular, like Madonna, Rachel Stevens, Sugarbabes etc. but pop can also mean stuff that has a pop aesthetic without actually being all that popular: Saint Etienne, Teenage Fanclub, Sharon Tandy, Annie, Ladytron, Solex etc.
I mean what can you class Damien Rice under (yes Jules, I know you've got answer to that )? He isn't country (damn straight!), he isn't folk, because I would argue that folk is music thats passed down from person to person within a community (arguably folk dies with the invention of recording, people no longer pass songs down orally, kids inherit their parents Beatles records), and well I suppose "acoustic rock" is as good a title as any? I mean if Coldplay and Brian Adams can be "rock"...

He, he, to be fair, if this site had been called irishmusicscene.com
I wouldn't have said anything but...what is 'rock' ? Its a fair question in this post i-tunes store world and one worth discussing. For the record, Damien Rice is not listed under Rock but he is listed under Folk, although this is not a 'slag ricecakes' thread (been there, done that, worn the Kenny Chesney t-shirt).

Well if you want to put him in a category, I'd say it would have to be 'folk rock'. And Vyvienne Long is a damn good rock celloist!
