Bear, Indie Schmindie, The Slits are PUNK, they started round '76, which is pre-indie. Le Tigre and Erase Errata are hardly your vanilla indie band either. In fact Le Tigres' stuff isn't exactly a million miles away from Peaches or Chicks On Speed (who are utterly brilliant, and way better than Le Tigre or Peaches, well in my opinion anyway)

Don't forget Kim Deal, Tanya Donelly and Kristin Hersh. In the mid 90s they seemed to be playing in every band on 4AD records; The Pixies, The Breeders, The Amps, Throwing Muses, Belly.
As far as I can see every second band on MTV2 has a female member. Just look at the likes of The White Stripes, Yeah Yeah Yeahs, The Kills, The Raveonettes, The Moldy Peaches, The Chalets, The Von Bondies, The Concretes, The Detroit Cobras, The Subways, Rilo Kiley, Garbage. And I'm not even mentioning traditional critic's favourites such as Low, Belle & Sebastian, Yo La Tengo, Stereolab, My Bloody Valentine, pu**y Galore, Boss Hog, Royal Trux, The Cramps, Sonic Youth, The Cocteau Twins...

damien rice has a female member? well, I know he's not very butch or macho, but surely his 'member' would be the standard-issue male one...

I'm shocked and appalled that no one has mentioned the God like genius of AIMEE MANN.
