I know there are a few fans of this genre on here. If I was going to start listening to country music where should I start. Listening to Johnny Cash over the last few weeks has me enthused.

of all the folks round these parts, Rev Jules is prob the best authority, bit for what its worth to ya, check out Steve Earle last CD, The Revoultion Starts Now. Also, Merle Haggard for your classics, John Hiatt for modern songwriting thats just brilliant and Chet Atkins for guitar playing that makes you wonder why anyone bothered playin after hearing him play.
Ricky Scaggs, John Prine...Jules should jump in with a better relpy sometime soon...

Speak of the Devil and he shall appear
For the Devil is never far from Country Music.
Well, Country music is a massive area so I would suggest that since you like Johnny Cash - a very popular choice, nobody ever seems to say, "Hey, I've just been listening to Conway Twitty and, as a result, I want to get into country music" - that you begin by exploring other artists to whom he has been connected. As a result, here are my first suggestions...
Kris Kristofferson
Merle Haggard
Waylon Jennings
Newer artists you might like...
Travis Tritt
Josh Turner
If you have, or have access to, an iTunes account, I would search those artists first, listen to the music samples available and download a selection of tracks that catch your fancy. A note: Country Artists don't do 'albums' very well and most of them are best enjoyed through 'best ofs'. Its a long story but I say it because you could spend alot of money otherwise trying to get hooked up.
Oh, and one other thing...if you listen to country music long enough you will start to feel the desire to own and wear, ahem, cowboy hats. Exhibit A, Bono at the 2005 Grammys. This doesn't have to be a life changing disaster - Mundy has happily worn one in the past - but you should be aware of it. Even Johnny Cash has not been immune.

Ask the Rev Jules or Binokular....they have superior knowledge on this genre.
I would recommend Guy Clark, Johnny Cash, Steve Earle, Willie Nelson, John Prine, Kristofferson and many more who I'm not sure can be classed as Country.

Me an expert on Country Music? Nah, definitely not. Jules is yer man.
All I got in my CD collection thats even vaguely country related is some Gram Parsons/Byrds stuff, Gillian Welch (top stuff!), Neil Young and the "O Brother Where art Thou" soundtrack. I used to have a Josh Ritter CD, but that got boring really quickly so I gave it away to a friend, who is enjoying it much more than I ever did.
While we're on the subject of country music and tapping Jules vast wealth of knowledge again, I recently came across an MP3 by a guy called d**k Curless via the wonder of Bubblegum Machine: http://www.bubblegum-machine.com/week92.html
He sounds a bit like Johnny Cash, so Jules, know anything about this guy and would you rate him in terms of good country music?

Haha, Eoghans must have put a swear filter on the board because It keeps putting stars in the middle when I type d**k, even though its perfectly innocent and the dudes name really is d**k. OK Richard Curless then?

Richard Curless was what you would call a 'truck driving' country singer in that his fans were mainly truckers and he used to play truckers coventions. He had 22 country hits including 'A Tombstone Every Mile' and his reading of 'I Walk The Line' is second only to Cash's version.
He died in 1995 after becoming a Born Again Christian. He is just one of many country artists who enjoyed success for a period but have been gradually forgotten by younger audiences. He is, like many others of his pedigree, certainly worth a listen. I think The Bear Family label in Germany still release his work.
You can actually download two free Curless tracks from Amazon by clicking on this link and scrolling down

Thanks for asking.
Townes Van Zandt I'll get to when I have the time but I would suggest that Bonzo looks at people like David Allan Coe before that.
By the way, Leonard 'Spock' Nimoy recorded a rather interesting version of I Walk The Line which is worth checking out. I guess he boldly walked where no man had walked before.

I always said religion was bad for ya!
Another option is to ease yourself into country via some of the better indie county cross over acts Uncle Tupelo, early WIlco, Gillian Welch, Drive By Truckers and so on.
Hank Williams might be a lot to chew on up front. The THe did a very interesting album of Hank William's covers called Hanky Panky a few years ago. A modern take on his tunes which really shows the quality of the songwriting. It can be picked up for next to nothing in most 2nd hand record stores.

My two cents:
I'm not a big country fan, and I don't like the band Big Country either , but seriously check out Ronnie Lane's Slim Chance - very british country, but not folk.

Yes, Drive By Truckers are excellent. Their 2004 platter 'Dirty South' is presently smoking up the CD player in my pick up. Hanky Panky features a wonderful version of 'Honky Tonkin'.
Vis a vis, Alt.Country, can I also suggest you check out Jim White ? He is on David Byrne's Luka Bop label and both he and his music feature in a new BBC documentary, 'In Search Of The Wrong Eyed Jesus'.
One last thing, a legendary film on 1970's New Country entitled 'Heartworn Highways' and featuring legends such as Guy Clark, Townes Van Zandt and the teen Steve Earle has just been rereleased on DVD. It is available at the moment in Tower Records and costs about 20 lids.

Good call Jules - Jim White is quality all the way. 'No Such Place' is worth the cost of the Album for the track 'Wound that never heals' alone.

Not country in the strictest sense, but I've always been a big fan of John Prine.
