What type of sound do you want? Modern or retro? Sharp or fat? It all depends. What bass player's tones do you dig? And what style of music do you play?

Fwell, what we need above all else is versatility - there are three of us playing bass with different styles, so we need one that can do chunky, slashy rhythm and that can have a lovely sharp clear tone for melody. Resonance good. I'll get back to you on the bass players we like after I talk to the others... As for what we play...think 66e, Radiohead...yet not at the same time.

grab urself a fender precision dude. i know it's predictable and a bit pricey but there's a reason they are still popular. top quality piece of kit. i've used it for evrything from trip hop to thrash and it always does a great job. BTW, i don't work for fender , just tried a lot of basses and never found anything quite like the p. i play a mexican one, they're about half the price of the US version and still sound like the biz. marky

Call me shallow if you want but I hate p-basses purely in terms of aesthethics, they're just ugly. More relevent is that I've been told that some people find them quite heavy, I'm big enough for it not to matter but it might be a factor for some people. I play a standard (mexican) jazz bass and I find it pretty versatile, good tone on the clean sound and still sounds great when I put it through loads of effects. It's a far more pretty guitar too. Of course, if you were going purely for aesthethics then I'd go for this baby (I want I want I want) http://www.fender.com/products/search.php?partno=0259505506

I really feel that the best all round bass - for low end meat but also for trebly punch - is the Rickenbacker 4001. Used by everyone from Paul McCartney to blues bands to indie bands to hard rock bands and funk bands. They're very expensive but i feel its a worthy investment compared to Fender basses. The playability of a Rickenbacker is super - the neck is so nice to play on. Check out reviews of any bass at www.harmony-central.com This is a great resource for musicians, especially in Ireland where we don't have great access to high end stuff.

http://www.buyandsell.ie/browse.php?quicksearch=rickenbacker+ This may be too good to be true, but this would be a great deal if you got it. Savage price for an excellent vintage bass. If i wasn't left handed, I would buy this.
