Irish Singer/Songwriter Tessa Perry Releases "Weightless"
First Full-Length CD On Newly-Formed Loyalkaspar Music Label
NEW YORK, NY - Tessa Perry (http://www.tessaperry.com), the soulful, Irish singer/songwriter, has released Weightless, a twelve track offering of deceptively soothing, deeply cutting songs. It is the first full-length CD from the Irish 28-year-old former busker and pub performer, and the first release from Loyalkaspar Music (http://www.loyalkasparmusic.com), the newly launched music division of the creative design/motion-graphics company Loyalkaspar (http://www.loyalkaspar.com). A three-month US tour will begin in Spring.
"I'm so happy to have completed this record," says Perry. "I've been carrying these songs around Europe and the US for a long time now, almost as if they were my children. Now, having recorded them I feel like I can move on, like I've sent the children off to college and I look forward to seeing them at weekends only! You might say that I'm feeling 'weightless.'"
Tessa has found a voice of her own, with a style that could be compared to the pensive writings of Dylan, Damien Rice and Patty Griffin. Perry's music has been described critics on both sides of the Atlantic as "wistful," "candid," "sweet as gin," and "harshly subtle." The songs run the gamut from the simple acoustic melody of "Jumping Puddles" to the more forceful "One Chord Song" and "Baltimore" - what ultimately ties Weightless together is Perry's insightful, deeply personal lyrics and the soulful warmth of her voice. She's all heart.
Born in England and raised on the West Coast of Ireland, Perry began her musical career at age18 armed only with a beat up guitar, three chords and three cover songs. She supported herself through busking on street corners and playing in pubs, for drinks. Tiring of those first three songs, Perry began soon began writing her own, gaining notice in the process. She released her debut EP, the five-track Live at DeBarras, in 2001.
"The EP did pretty well, considering that we were just selling it at gigs," says Perry "it got me gigs with people like Ani Difranco and the Indigo girls and opened a lot of doors for me. I worked a lot of day jobs before coming to New York though. Most of the songs on Weightless were written during that time. They are mostly about letting go, being yourself and taking responsibility for the person that you are."
Promising a Dublin bank that she would buy a car with the money they loaned her, Perry traveled instead to New York City where, through a myriad of open mic performances, she gained the attention of Beat Baudenbacher and David Herbruck, co-founders of Loyalkaspar and new music label Loyalkaspar Music.
"Tessa is someone we've known for years, and she's really a partner in the label," says Baudenbacher. "We always wanted our company to be more than just motion graphics, and we decided this was the right time. A lot of companies wish they could do other stuff, but can't find the time or energy. We decided that we had to make good on both."
