exhibit 51 are a four piece band, who experiment with extemporised recording. The music, which is purely instrumental, has been described as an eclectic hybrid of electro rock.
During the recording process, the songs are extemporised, meaning the music is played, without any advanced thought, in an impromptu fashion.
This is different to improvisation, which suggests a preconceived structure or base.
In extemporising, the band record in an off-the-cuff manner and let the music materialise naturally. The one take recordings are the subsequently produced and this is what is heard on the CD. This means that the listener hears the creation of the song, within the song.
The extemporisation of a song occurs once only and what the listener hears is what transpires in one room, during one moment.
With this approach, the recordings tend to capture organic musical events, rather than perfected performances.
Bringing the music to a live situation, requires the band to replicate the original recordings as accurately as possible.
