i hope they sort out the sound in meeting house square and the smell in the hub.

most people seemed to either stick to the meeting house sq / tbmc / hub triangle or stay in spirit..

saw lots of bands, nothing to write home about. looking forward to tonight..

    any thoughts?

Yeah, sound was low in meeting house square, but given the proximity of apartments on the streets surrounding, perhaps the High Kings of Temple Bar decide on a max noise level. Which is understandable, and I'm not just saying that coz me best mate recently moved into a place on Essex St... Smell in the Hub was ungodly, particularly over near the gents toilets. Don't have the energy to give intelligent, thought-provoking reviews, so brief synopsis Pugwash (great, Thomas's voice was as good as ever. It's probably what kept me sane through the stench) The Marshals (as milkman said, sound was low, but they looked great on stage and sounded tight as usual) The Immediate (only caught 2 songs or so but was grand. Singer really has great stage presence and sure they're lovely lads. Well, I know they're all singers, kinda, but I mean the tall one...) Ham Sandwich (grand, not mad about their stuff in general. Not blistering but twasn't too bad) Michael Knight (were the mics dodgy? Three lovely lady singers and it was hard to hear even one. But I love their stuff anyway, plus Richie was sporting what's beginning to look like a Wyatt Earp 'tache so it's all good.) FKOS (just played the classics. Don't they have a new album? Maybe last night wasn't the time to air all new stuff. Just kinda hypocritical coz a friend of mine interviewed them a a good while back and, in the absence of any new material, she had to refer back to the most recent album which was...2002? And they got pretty pissed off and said they were sick of always talking about their old albums....but what was she supposed to do? And then they get it together again, play the TBMC, and start banging out all the hits. The same friend was there last night. Oh how she rolled her eyes... Tonight, off the top of head, most looking forward to Ian Archer, Delorentos and Peaches. Will have to check what else is on coz i'm fecked if I can remember that many bands.

Just back from this (Saturday's lineup) a few minutes ago.. didn't bother with the 'headliners' because I wasn't especially interested in any of them. I was going in to see Dae Kim in the Hub and was a little peeved to find after rushing into town for 8pm that they'd cancelled, so went across to watch Annette Buckley in Pravda for 20 minutes then came back to see Saso in Meeting House Square. Saso were a bit underwhelming, as pointed out above the volume was fairly low so it was a bit difficult to 'feel' it in a large enough space like that, plus there were only about 20 people there when they started. Okayish ambient rock tunes, it seemed to be centered around the vocal lines but the singers voice was so soft that there wasn't a whole lot of an impact.. Went across to Spirit afterwards to see Queen Kong, who were fantastic, elements of 'electroclash' and no-wave rock, some great tunes and a very energetic performance - they were the discovery of the evening for me. Lastly came back to Meeting House Square which was now a bit more full to see Channel One for the first time. Enjoyed most of their set, with a couple of songs dragging into a kind of repetitive techno style but most of them managing a pretty engaging sort of chilly dance-rock. Again the volume limiters didn't help but it was better close to the stage. They seemed to have quite a few followers judging from the cheers, must be working up an audience for themselves. Decent evening's entertainment anyway, worth a tenner I'd say.

My tuppence worth from last night: Overall-great value for money. I saw: Lost- good musicians, tight live but their sound is a few years too late I think-shame there were not more there to see them Myp et Jeep-emo rock, not my cup of tea but liked the drummer-he really gave it all Ruby Tailights-not for me 8 Ball-great fun and great live show Sickboy-excellent The Mighty Stef-first time to see them and very keen to after the praise they receive on this site-and they didn't disappoint-in response to another thread-I would say they are Dublin's best live band at any rate and probably best band full stop.

Ok, so I mixed up peaches - she's on tonight. Hope the rain holds off. (I sound like me ma...) Last night, didn't see as many coz was late coming in. Do Envelope - very reminiscent of 66e, therefore, not bad at all! heh Delorentos - f**ks sake, why were they stuck in the music centre, it was hysterically packed. Reminded me of their EP launch night way back whenever, one of those gigs that so packed everyone's mashed in making faces and grimacing at each other. Anyway, they were really good, they're never anything but really tight and really up for it. Vocals were brilliant, really getting stronger all the time. Ian Archer - he was lost on the stage in meeting house square, I thought. Kinda forgetable, sadly. The Might Stef - deadly. Noise Control - left when they came on, was too tired to be into it at that stage. (again, i sound like me ma)

I thought Noise control were superb. My first time catchin them and they didnt dissapoint. Aleko in spirit on Friday were really great too. As were Channel One last night. The Immediate were the stars of the weekend though. They never fail to impress.

strongly agree with you there roxy , thought the sound and performance was very very weak for him, i missed noise control (have seen em before and they're deadly) and headed to pravda instead

(I thought there'd be more folk here throwing their hats in the ring, tbh...! tum tee tum) Ok, so, what did Sunday bring.... Tadhg Cooke - stupid talkie crowd in Pravda but he played gorgeously as he always does. Always love the addition of the bass in the live set. Mm-mm. Caught a couple of tracks from the chapters. Not quite my thing, bit kinda stadium rock and sorta a middle-aged appeal! But they're tight and looked like they were having fun so fair play, can't fault them really. Betamax Format - absolutely brilliant, I know it's a pisser for a band when people talk about the lights instead of the music, but they really added so much to the whole thing. Fair play. Saw a bit of The Radio, not overly mad on their stuff, but sure anyway. Simple Kid - what a dude. He's so in his element on stage, it's really attractive to watch coz he's so at ease with himself. Crowd loved it. Venue suited him too (Spirit main room) Finally, Peaches - the lady does a mean show! I wonder what became of the 8ft penis in the end... I sound so braindead - told you my reviews wouldn't be up to much....!

I didn't think they just "stuck to the classics" at all They played 4 new songs out of about 10 by my count. Saturday night in the music centre was great too... orphan code I'd not heard of before but was very impressed, and the place was jammed for the delerentos but I didn't really see/hear the big deal. Went around to Iain archer then and it was like listening to music underwater...terrible low volume it was. And as for the "rock room" in spirit...it would be nice to hear some vocals in there once and a while.

Sound on the meeting house square stage was waaaaaaaay too low i thought. Saw the Things last night, and they blew me away, f**king amazing set. By far the best ive ever seen them, absolutely savage. Actually thought they were much better than peaches, the whole set just flowed through. Quality. peaches was great too, shes something else on stage! Had heard good things about giveamanakick too, they didnt really do anything for me. they were quite good, but never really that great

Saw loads of bands over the weekend and was a bit gutted really... alot of very average bands working very hard to play average music. Stand out bands were Sickboy... actually enjoyable, despite the poor sound on the vox, reminded me of DFA 1979. Betamax Format are worth a look. Twin Kranes also because they looked like they were doing their own thing and I believed them, also The Urges for the same reason. The Immediate were literally in their own league... they've raised the bar. Other bands I heard loads about and had a look at were so bland. Cowboy X. The Chapters. Delorentos. Really didn't see/hear anything that would even raise an eyebrow.

very enjoyable weekend. lots of goos bands and some who were poor. i felt the staff working in the venues were generally fine but the spirit staff were very rude and agressive and it almost ruined my weekend. my personal highlights, evelope (very interestng), noise control (exciting) , betamax format (very high potential i think) and delorentos (fantastic songs and live show). Cowboy X were greatly aided by the fact that herself is so easy on the eye, but ask me to remember a single tune and I could not. The chapters were a big let down for me, 'cause last time I saw them they were superb, last night tho they could have been any band in the world. SuperJimenez last night in the music centre were good (lead singers dodgy kasabian type jacket aside) and didn't look to be trying too hard either.

funniest / scariest moment of the weekend - the Mighty Stef stagediving during The Things. probably not very funny for whoever he clattered into the second time though. i used to hate The Things but it was really good to see so many people dancing during their set and some energy. i saw some shocking bands this weekend...The Heathens in Spirit last night being one. Blues Hammer to the max. anyway for what it's worth my highlights were Queen Kong and Giveamanakick. not exactly new discoveries though.

I thought that Giveamanakick were appauling - like Metal Machine Music without the hooks. The Mighty Stef was his usual class self, he put everything he had into his great songs, but his drummer let them down a bit - he was lagging. I thought the Marhsals were really tame - bored the bejesus out of me. Delorentos blew me out of it. Every single song is a hit. They're such good performers and so tight its like listening to a cd with great big balls - and the vocals were perfect.

Just can't get my head around Delorentos... I think they're massively over-rated.

They quietly get on with it and don't flaunt themselves or push themselves in anyone's faces. The fact that they make lots of people happy (lots and lots judging by the other night) is just the result of having great choons and never failing to give really enjoyable performances. Pity you're not into them but sure that's the way it goes.
