read that the Irish Your a farce winner 2006 was dropped by her label last week. Do you think the fact that Irish Pop Star Talent show winners have done crap proves once and for all that Irish people dont go for the same sh*te as in Britain? Does anyone else feel that the money spent by RTE on these failures could have been better spent on perhaps producing an alternative music show (that is aired before midnight)? If so, why isnt it happening?

they have nothing to do with nurturing talent. it;s a TV show, it's about entertainment and getting ratings. Any person who enters them thinking they're actually going to do well on a longterm basis out of it is thick. There are a few exceptions (Will Young, Kelly Clarkson, Lemar) but most of these would possibly have done well without the shows, and anyway, they all won in the early stages of such formats

To think that the money could have been "better spent" is naive, this show is clearly a moneyspinner that attracts viewers and advertising. The cash would have come out of RTEs light entertainment budget as that is exactly what it is. If anything, it generates aditional revenue that could be spent on a decent music show. The idea of an "alternative" (which is a 90s genre label really) music show in this day and age is a bit twee and outdated though, one focusing on the genuinely leftfield, experimental or avant-garde would be good though (as opposed to merely unknown). The simple reason for this is that the public is now very accepting of bands that previously would have been classed alternative or indie. All these bands need is decent mainstream coverage like any other act. Take E4s "Popworld" for example, you're just as likely to see the Yeah Yeah Yeahs on it as Jamelia. Indie is just another part of the greater pop er..world these days. Come to think of it, RTE doesn't seem to have Pop music show these days as far as I know? Maybe that's all that's needed? A smart weekly magazine type show covering all areas of popular music, alternative/indie included. Some real pop stars rather than people pretending to be pop stars?

This is kind of funny cos I'm a bit of a sucker for the entertainment value of pop talent shows and would have watched nearly all of last years You're A Star but right now I can't even think of who won it!!!!........sums it all up really, once the show is over no one cares about them. As has been said its purely TV entertainment thats all, get texing and pay Pat Kennys salary. I watched How Do You Solve A Problem Like MAria? recently, really enjoyed it!! But texts were only 25p and 12p went towards music scholarship/bursaries which I thought was pretty good.

The X factor is comic genius, the auditions. After that, I don't bother watching. The Oirish versions are horrendous

I believe that Mickie Joe Hart has carved out a decent little career for himself.

Maybe that explains their not so successful season ... maybe Eurovision Mickey Harte was training them. Thinking about it, if Tyrone Mickey Harte turned up in the studio, maybe this led to him being dropped by the label.

Last year i watched You're A Spa maybe twice, and i voted both times for this girl who had'nt a note in her head. I was hoping they would have to try promote her when the show was over, now that would be funny and entertaining

Last year during the run of you're a star I was spending most of my sundays attempting to make music with my mates, at 6:30 every week all music related activities ceased while we had our tea and sat down to watch the programme. Then Jeannette Cronin (we liked her, she was "kooky") was voted off and we started working all the way through to 9. Ah the memories.
