Have there been many successful comebacks in recent years for musicians? With new releases on the way from Yusuf Isalm (Cat Stevens) and one-hit wonder Babybird, there must be people looking forward to their comeback. And what exactly is a comeback in music these days? Is it Elton John releasing an album after five years or members of The Jayhawks turning up on the new Golden Smog record or simply someone we have forgotten about and decides to return with new material?

Don't call it a comeback. NEVER call it a comback.

These days it seems normal for an artist to wait several years in between albums. Even fives a bit much, but Im sure back in the day Elton released at least one album a year, whereas nowadays the record company would probably frown on two albums a year... overflooding the market etc etc I remember reading a recent Mojo article on some female folkie 60's singer, Buffy St Marie or one of them, thats just released her first album in something like thirty years. Now thats a comeback.

I suppose the term "comback" could be seen as a bit of an insult to an artist as they never really went away as such. The music that they have already released should be enough to "keep it lit" so to speak. Take Kate Bush for instance..releasing "Aeriel" after something like 10 years..I'd never refer to that as a comeback..

Johnny Cash's rejuvenation on the american recordings could have been considered a "comeback" of sorts

That'd be Vasthi Bunyan. Disappeared in a caravan up to scotland, lived in Ireland too for a while, after recording her debut in the late sixites. The album was rediscovered a couple of years ago by some navel-gazing nu-folkies and she released her second album last year. Mad tale alright. both albums are nice too.

I was wracking my brains trying to think of her name. And I see Mary Wells from the ShangRi La's is embarking on her first album, forty years after entering the biz. It sounds like a good'un too, Greg Cartright is involved. His "Reigning Sound" are terrific.

All Saints are making a comeback apparently, which is probably one of the more unexpected revented comebacks lately. Too fresh in memory for people to get nostalgic, yet at the same time the pop landscape has radically changed in the last 5 years.
