New York show (from NME) Damien Rice performs tiny show Damien Rice performed for an audience of around 200 people in New York at the weekend (September 15) - and was introduced by Bono. The star played a surprise show at the Hudson Hotel, watched by a supermodel-heavy crowd. Introducing Rice, U2 frontman Bono said: "What you're about to hear and see is like being at a Bob Dylan gig in the early Sixties or a Cat Stevens gig in the early Seventies or James Taylor, or something extraordinary. "Damien Rice is able to still and distil the storms into quiet reflection. He's really a remarkable talent, I can't quite believe that he's here. I'm very humbled and very honoured and I would ask New York to give him the kind of welcome only New York, only Manhattan can, and then give him the silence he deserves because this is something very special." The fellow Irishmen were in New York to promote the ONE campaign to make poverty history, and the Edun clothing line owned by Bono, his wife Ali Hewson and designer Rogan Gregory. Rice repeatedly demanded silence, and played just two songs for the crowd which included supermodels Helena Christensen and Christy Turlington, Ed Burns, James Iha and Heather Graham. Think I'm going to be sick, give it a rest Bono you freak "supermodel-heavy crowd" - mmm this must be in reaction to the ban on super thin models at the Madrid Fashion Week. A tiny show with a tiny set of 2 songs!!!!

Give Bono his due, he'll do and say anything to make poverty history, as for Damien Rice, he'll get the silence he deserves soon enough, when he is sitting alone in a motel in Tijuana telling the pool guy, "I usta be a contenda !!!"

Very funny topic..... But on this whole silence thing, I just don't get it?? I'll actually have a s**tty gig if I can't hear what the people are talking about at the bar!! Ya' see it means I have David Blaine-like ammunition when I finish a song. I can say "Hey I think you should go to the Spy Bar later on etc, etc and they think you're a mind reading super human and then and ONLY then do you get the respect from the audience that you need.....

Between Bono's ridiculously OTT speech (I'm genuinely worried for this man's mental well-being) and Rice 'demanding silence', I don't know which is more depressing. Has the whole world gone crazy? Both of them should be ****.
