Universal Music is to go head to head with Apple Computer's popular iTunes music store in a venture that will allow consumers to download songs without charge and rely on advertising for its revenues.

Genius idea if they can make it work, the best way to stop piracy is give it away free and generate your revenue by other means. Hopefully they won't lock it down with too many levels of DRM. That's the main reason I never use iTunes unless I absolutely have to, makes playing your files on mulitple devices (like a car MP3 head unit) a pain. Ironically it's pretty easy to sidestep iTunes DRM by burning to CD and then converting the CD to Mp3 without any noticeable loss of sound quality. DRM is stupid.

It was all over the news today. The site is called 'SpiralFrog' and they're launching in the US and Canada in Dec, Europe in the New Year. Totally up-front, legit service. They've got Universal on board already. The music is free, revenue will be made from advertising. You won't, of course, be able to play the music on yr iPod. We'll wait and see. There will be some stupid catch. There always is.

I cant see this of being any use to people. In all likelihood you will have to listen to an advertising jingle before each song. Would any of ye seriously put up with that..

I use a program called Tunebite to convert m4p files to mp3. I think it cost about €15. I likes it alot.

Thanks, I'll give it a try. Tried a similar app before though and it wasn't unable to unlock iTunes 6 DRM.
