Whether you have an original 7'' from a band who have now gained global success or a dusty EP from a songwriter that should be worth something in a few years time, most music collectors (or fans) have a few pieces on their hands that they consider to be very valuable. What rare additions are in your collection?

about half of my collection is pre-release promo stuff from record labels, so I guess they'd be valuable to fans who collect everything in every format...

I have a version of 'Under a Blood Red Sky' by U2 that has the 'Bring on the clowns' on it. From before they re-pressed and removed it from the recording. *UPDATE, I've just checked ebay and it's not that rare after all ;-(. I have a White Vinyl of Dark Side of the Moon and a shrink wrapped Abbey Road.. *Update, I;ve just checked ebay and it's not that rare after all either... My Sister used to live with this Englsh bloke. He had a massive collection of Records and left them behind when he realised what she was like. I pilfered a couple of dozen cool ones from it but always meant to go back and get more. Unfortunately she moved and left them in the attic of the house. We went back, gone. Anyone find a huge record collection in their house?? Loads of Santana, Kraftwerk, Neil Young etc??? Perhaps A giant red Teddy-Chair too (She left that behind aswell) ???

The 'rare' records that I am most proud of (rather than the most valuable) are two Neutral Milk Hotel singles: 7" on Cher Doll - Everything Is.. b/w Snow Song Pt. One 1994 7" on Blue Rose Records - Holland, 1945 b/w Engine 1998 However, other stuff like the deleted version of 24 Hour Party People (with Desmond) is probably worth more. And The Ink Spots 78s are probably worth nothing, but they should be.

I love that extra on the High Fidelity where the woman asks him around to the house to purchase her husbands record collection which she had been instructed to sell by her husband who had just run off with the secretary... She was getting rid of the collection for f*ck all and was insisting he take them at the dirt cheap price, but he just couldnt do this to a music collection..classic

In the book thats one of the most real moments especially the point the wife makes about how her husband sat round with all his records but actually did nothing except talk about doing something.

Only real thing of note I have, is a Ben Kweller mini-album 'Freak Out, its ...' It was going for £100 on eBay a few yrs ago after he played a storming show at Glastonbury. The album has his cover of 'Ice Ice Baby' on it, which he opens his set with. EDIT: Meant to say, I got it for a fiver from the man when he played Whelans with Evan Dando & Ben Lee.

I f**king love Ben Kweller. I have the original version of 'Made It Up' , which was a B-Side on the Radish single 'Little Pink Stars'. It's way better than the Sha Sha version.

Probably the most potentially valuable thing I have is a Damien Rice 7" which was limited to a 500 copy pressing which is signed by Rice and Vyvienne Long. I'm a sucker for buying 7"s of band's I'm into so you never know if they'll wind up worth something. I've got 2 copies of Arcade Fire's "Cold Wind" (one released by Merge, one by Rough Trade, slightly different artwork) which could be worth something if in the future. Copies of their first 7" are already going for upwards of $150 on e-bay.

Would love to get my hands on The Beatles butcher album cover for "Yesterday and Today." I have SFA rare cuts unless the Sufjan Stevens "Illinois" with the Superman on the cover has mushroomed in value. Have a couple of crap vinyl singles i bought in the later 80's but i seriously doubt their worth.

Have a few that might be worth a few quids - should really do a check and see if they are worth much...anyway, my fav old albums on vinyl are... David Bowie (and the Lower Third) - 1966 Rolling Stones - Big Hits (High Tide and Green Grass) 1967 Georgie Fame - Yeh Yeh Its Georgie 12” 1968? Bee Gees - Marley Purt Drive 12” LP 1969 King Crimson - In The Court of Crimson King, 1972 I think. Few singles that might be worth a quid like The Stranglers, Walk On By from 1978 and David Bowie - John I'm only dancing (1975) some northern soul and Jam/Style Council singles,a couple of Pulp and Super Furry Animal 7"s from 1993 & 95 that might be worth a few quid now too. Here...we should set up a swap shop for unwanted records...or could anyone part with their records?? Though I find it hard to part with things that I don't even listen to anymore and i know are a bit crap, cos they're kind of sentimental. It would be like throwing out old photos.

My pops had hundreds of rare vinyl from first pressings of Ziggy Stardust/ Bowie, Black Sabbath, Ry Cooder etc. He was a huge music fan. The Guardian/Observer did a feature on the ten most expensive rare records and he had three of them worth thousands of sterling Then his brother sold them for a pittance, no High Fidelity scenario for me. I still cry

Thats kind of interesting for the fact that the 4th type of most valuable record of all time is only worth £5,000-£5,500. I thought this stuff would be worth more, its takes a Beatles White album numbered 1-10 to get into 5 figures! What do ye think current music buying habits will have on collectibility and value considering probably less records are being bought with more and more stuff being downloaded. Will this make current music purchases even more valuable than before .... well thats what i'd have thought anyway.

That list is b*ollocks. What about the £15,000 that some fool payed for an original 7" pressing of Do I Love You by Frank Wilson; http://www.thisoldsoul.com/fw.html The rarest record that I own is the Artic Monkeys's debut EP on 7". They only pressed up 500 copies on vinyl and 1000 on CD. If anybody else wants a copy you can buy it off eil.com for just over €180.

With the likes of contemporary stuff i.e. the Arctic Monkey's 7" that Stroller has for example, i wonder if it happens that they fade away into the bowels of one hit wonderdom, whether that value would hold?
