I saw this over on Phantoms forum ... Basically, turn up at Crawdaddy on Wed & they'll be playing the new Young Knifes album before it comes out on Fri ... What do you think of them, Are they a good, or silly idea ?

Sorry, needed to clarify what I mean by 'them'. I meant Playbacks, not the band themselves. The cost of a tour, compared to throwing out a few preview cds to play in clubs as a 'first listen' ...

I think they're pointless. So you hear the album a few days before everyone else does.So what?? I can kind of understand playbacks for huge 'event' albums like the next U2,Coldplay,Dylan, Radiohead album etc where there is a massive worldwide interest and anticipation of the new material. But The Young Knives?? Who cares?? Big fcuking deal. I'm sure their biggest fans can wait til Friday when the album's released proper.

Have to agree with Antistar there. Really dont see the point in it at all. Anywho, for anyone who is actually considering going, theres a podcast with a preview of the new album here: http://entertainment.timesonline.co.uk/article/0,,14932-2306879,00.html

Their biggest fans will probably have downloaded the album as soon as it leaks a few weeks/months before it was due for release.

Well I have to say that I care a lot more about the new Young Knives album than I do about the latest U2 or Coldlay LP.

Be that as it may, these kind of events only have a meaning if it's deemed elitist that you get into them. And to have an elite, you have to have a mainstream. I agree with Antistar - maybe for the super bands, but otherwise seem pointless. ais.

Surely a packed venue won't stand in silence listening to an album straight through.......people are destined to move around, start chatting, want to dance etc, so the intended atmosphere of listening to the exclusive album preview would be ruined. It's just copying the idea of a launch party that most big bands do for journalists and PR executives, but with people not attending to review the album but enjoy a night out and listen to some good music, this format is destined to flop.

it's just an album promotion really. All very TRL. Although they're played here last night, so maybe they'll show up.

Exactly the fact that the album has probably been availble online for months renders these absolutely pointless bar the fact that if its an album you like then you're guaranteed good music to enjoy your pint.

ah, it's one for the fans. I'm sure they'll be giving out goodies and what not. Wednesday's in Crawdaddy are great craic - might head down myself tonight, although I'm always left feeling like I'm the oldest f**king person in the room :( Alcohol numbs the pain : )

I'm 33. Who are the Young Knives? What is TRL? I'm retiring early tonight, on account of my old age. Good night.
