thought i'd take this out of the mcd thread and start a new one...
    quote:
would definitely agree that independent promoters would be the way to go, only problem is that they are independent and so face huge obstacles, bit of a catch 22. Especially since the majority of people who make mcd their money seem to have no interest in going to smaller indie style thangs.
who did we mention before: u:mack, skinny wolves, deserted village, foggy notions, twisted robot, lazybird... here's some of the gigs they've put on recently or will be putting on in the coming couple of months: deerhoof vetiver russian futurists camera obscura final fantasy boredoms !!! lightning bolt battles autechre cocorosie comets on fire six organs of admittance dirty three caribou fugazi the evens gang gang dance section 25 the telescopes charalambides erase errata the slits numbers liars sunburned hand of the man that's off the top of my head... now, if you were to ask me to go to 10 gigs in 2006 and i either had to pick 10 gigs from independent promoters or 10 gigs from mcd / aiken, i'd more than likely go with the former... the more we support them, the better gigs they will be able to attract

hell yeah, but its the other 60,000 people who go to oxegen that wont. when are caribou and fugazi playing? also, best band name ever: six organs of admittance, quality! skinny wolves also put on the redneck manifesto a while ago and that was a really well run gig.

There was an illegal warehouse party planned for last Saturday. Unfortunately, not enough people were interested and the lads had to cancel it as the last minute. Bodytonic Rosman (not sure if they're still going.)

caribou played early in the year (or was it late last year?)... i took a bit of poetic license with fugazi... they've been independently promoted here on more than one occasion but it was ian mackaye and amy farina (as the evens) who were over here this year... six organs of admittance are playing whelans at the end of november actually thought you were referring to acts going to larger promoters - having reread it, i see that you were meaning joe public... i sort of agree but people tend to be like sheep... the independents are becoming more popular quite quickly and will end up with more pulling power on the back of this... they will eat away at the big companies slowly but surely with the support behind them

Just to add to this list a few more that occurred to me: Foggy Notions put on those Bonnie 'Prince' Billy shows in Whelan's this year. The Ballroom of Romance put on Kimya Dawson (of the Moldy Peaches). And Skinny Wolves brought over Finnish spacerockers CIRCLE and no-wave-ish rockers Numbers this year. Anyway, that list just makes me think: 'let them keep their rubbish festivals' :)

We'd be lost if it weren't for U Mack, He's put on all the best gigs this summer.. Just like to add to the list: Guesswork. They brought over Jeniferever earlier this Summer and are bringing over the wonderful Redjetson in two weeks.

I'm guessing that we the cluasers of this world are to be promoting our gig in September, but would it be a terrible suggestion to get one of these independent promoters to do it? I know its not much time to be advertising it (though the acts haven't yet been finalised to my knowledge). This is most likely a silly suggestion since most of the head honchos of the site organised the acts themselves, but just for future reference, if the site had the money to do it and just to show support even for the independents. I'll realise how (un)silly this is in about five minutes after I write this

Problem with that as I see it is that it's going to be a benefit gig and we'd probably want to get as much money to the charity as possible.

There's also EMC Promotions who are looking after the You Am I gig in The Village this Sunday. Without someone sticking their neck out for good bands from all over we'd all be in watching tv under the blankets every night. www.emcpromotions.com ¦ www.youami.com.au
