Not going to stand up and defend TOTP, because, yeah, it was mainly dross and since it covered the full spectrum of pop music from Weezer to the Wombles, it couldn't actually fully please anyone. Yet at the same time, that's kind of it's relevance to popular music. It was like a focal point or hub for all popular music. Every band, regardless of whether they are Pop Idol rejects or super credible indier than thou, secretly dreams of being on top of the pops.
BBC cancelling TOTP is an admission that home makeover TV has more relevance to popular culture than pop music? After all MTV doesn't play very much pop music these days, it's just there to fill the gaps between Pimp my Ride, Cribs and some documentary about obnoxious super rich teenagers? Music is a popluar as ever but there is very little popular (i.e. universally appealing) music?
Anyway, Personally, I reckon the best "Pop" program of late has been E4s Popworld (yeah, laugh if you want, I like it), it's funny, varied, irreverent, clever and very entertaining.
