Folks, After a (reasonably sober) night out last week, I discovered the screen on my 4 year old iPod cracked. So, I'm in the mix for a new MP3 player. Having had a 20Gig version, I'm not really interested in anything that size again - basically, I discovered that I had 15G of music I rarely if ever listen to. Anyhow, any recommendations on a 1G to 5G player with decent software for making playlists? I like the size of the USB players but really want the ability to create playlists (one of the few things iTunes is decent for). Also, question for you muso-geeks out there - I had a PC go south on me a while back and lost my mp3 archive. Thankfully, I recovered it directly from the iPod (woohoo!). Unfortunately, all my mp3s (thousands) are in a single folder and not in the artist/album directories I originally had (bah!). The files are tagged correctly (i.e. if you hover the cursor over them in Windows, they show Artist, album etc info. Does anyone know of any software that can read this info and re-organise the directory structure accordingly? Here's hoping....

Either of these should be able to do the trick; http://ostermiller.org/mp3tagger/ http://www.wma-mp3.com/mp3_tag_editor.html

A USB player could support playlists if it can read .m3u files, basically a text file with the extension .m3u. You could then use winamp to create playlists. Detailed explanation here: http://hanna.pyxidis.org/tech/m3u.html I prefer SD card based players as it allows me to take the same music from device to device. e.g. portable player to car stereo with SD slot, plus when I want more storage, I just pay for storage, not an entire new player.
