the first download chart will be published next Friday, so we can all look forward to a more accurate representation of what we're all buying.

I can't understand why download high street stores don't exists yet. All you need is a very small shop, somewhere central. The idea being you bring in your mp3 player and get the albums you want put on it for a fee. Not everyone has broadband and kids mightn't be allowed shop online i think theres a big gap in the market. Even with a fee wacked on it would be still cheaper than buying the actual cd. Does this kind of thing exist in other countries yet?? Think i'll have to get this idea off the ground.

Where's the profit margin? Apple aren't going to give you a discount on MP3's. You'll have to pay €1 a tune same as everybody else, plus you'll have to pay vat at 21% and you'll have to factor in Wages, Rent, Light, Heating, Advertising and your actual profit. You'd have to charge a minimum of €2.50 an MP3. Who'd pay that kind of money when they can just go to a friends house and purchase the same product for a fraction of a price? Plus it's not legal. It's illegal under Irish law to copy music onto any format (including digital) unless you've gained permission from whoever owns the copy right. A British company who specialise in transfering customers CD collections onto their ipods where forbidden from opening a branch in Ireland for this very reason.

The chart will be a sham until all sales are counted, and they are equal.
The idea of varying the shops where sales count, & that depending on where you buy it, it is worth more sales than in another store, is a nonsense.

well the service potentially could be combined into the likes of an elctronic shop already selling mp3 players to minimise additional cost or it might go well in a video rental store like xtravision. Why wouldn't apple give it cheaper? If a massive chain store did a deal with apple to sell tunes from itunes commercially surely they'd get them cheaper? You say its illegal here, why you'd be just downloading from itunes directly to an ipod, apple or whatever online service being used would be paying the copyright, why would that be illegal? Transferring cd collections to mp3 sounds slightly different although by the sounds of it that law needs to be changed here.

Once you've downloaded MP3's onto your PC it is illegal to copy them onto your MP3 player without permission. It is illegal to make compilation CD of tracks that you legally own already witout permission. It is illegal to record your old vinyl LPs onto cassette without permission. It is illegal to tape songs off the radio without permission. No individual is ever going to be prosocuted for these crimes if he's just copying songs for personal use but if you were making a commercial gain from breaking the law then you'd get done fairly lively.

according to IRMA, in theory, yes. Because you are duplicating files.

wow! that makes absolutely no sense
in a related topic
quote:
P2P insurer will pay your fines if RIAA sues: $19/year!
David sez, "Apparently, a company in Sweden is offering file-sharing insurance - they'll pay your fines if you're sued by the RIAA. The submitter translates the link as follows: 'For a mere 140 SEK ($19 USD) per year, they will pay all your fines and give you a t-shirt if you get convicted for file sharing.'"
I have no idea if these insurers can be trusted with $19/year, but it actually sounds like a pretty plausible business model. If you count up all the file-sharers on the net, and divide it by the all the fines and settlements ever paid to the RIAA, my guess is that it's way less than $19/year, which suggests that you could make a buck (or Kronor) at this. This article estimates the odds of being sued by the RIAA at 1:1840. This works out to a break-even point of $34960 per lawsuit.

Mully never said Mundy was no1, just that he made it into the chart.
I like that Shakira song. The album is pretty good too.

Nobody mentioned No.1, Jules.
From his site.
Mundy’s’ July’ (live) single is released as a physical CD single today 7th July following it’s release as a download last week which saw it enter the Irish singles chart at number 16.
This made it the first Irish song ever to enter the new combined singles chart purely on download sales.
