There’s loads of these going on in Dublin. The biggest and most prestigious of these at the moment is the Ruby Sessions – Doyles pub, College Green, every Tuesday night. Starts at 9.30, usually about five acts, each act gets about 20 minutes. I’ve played there myself several times. The last was about two years ago. Last time I checked there was a big waiting list of acts wanting to play so if you’re thinking of playing there be prepared to wait a while. The guy who runs it – Niall McGuckin – usually looks for a demo from anyone wanting to play. Dave Murphy runs one on Tuesday nights in the Bankers pub off Dame Street. This one is held in the basement of the pub – there’s no PA and it’s only a small room so it’s nice and relaxed, a bit like playing in someone’s house. I think Dave does one on Monday nights in the International too. There used to be one On Tuesday nights on the Mezz in Temple Bar as well although it’s over a year since I was there last so I don’t know if that’s still on the go. There’s a pub in Dame Street called Rogue which advertises an “acoustic DJ” which I think is a singer / songwriter night as well. I know they’ve had people doing covers there so it might be worth a look.
