Chili Peppers new single "Dani California" is an absolute rip off
of Tom Pettys "Last dance with Mary Jane".
It's the same key,tempo,chord structure,melody & there are
similar lyrics.I can't host an mp3 at the moment but if you hear
them you'll know instantly.
Can't see the peppers getting away with this one.

Considering that Petty himself owes a great deal to The Byrds, I doubt he's going to be too upset about a bit of plagiarism. Full Moon Fever was great, but most stuff since has been really bland, just Generic American Adult Rock Radio stuff, so the fact that someone sounds just like him is hardly suprising.

But Petty is one of those classic rock (played at every 21st/wedding/birthday function) kinda artist. It's inevitable that musicians growing up listening to his great tunes are going to be influenced by him, just as every musician is influenced by somebody.
Full Moon Fever is indeed a great album and your spot on about his recent stuff, but I'm looking forward to his new one. One of the things that I always find strange about Tom Petty (especially his work with The Heartbreakers) is that he is such a talented songwriter, a master of those quirky melodies that you hum all day long, yet his output has been fairly sub-standard e.g. best album is the Greatest Hits 'Through The Years'. It's so disappointing when a musician releases so much crap.

Right, first off they are different songs, the two nerds on the clip significantly avoid playing the one part of the two tracks that is an actual melody (ie: the chorus) and there is no similarity, to say the verse is the same is nonsense, its two yanks talking over a bass vamp and the intro doesn't count either, four basic chords.
Here are three distinct songs that all have exactly the same chord progession
With or Without You - U2
Let it Be - The Beatles
I'm Goin' Down - Bruce Springsteen
For the record, there is a section in 'Feel Good Inc' by Gorrilaz which is a direct melody lift from 'Staring At The Sun' by U2.
So what, there are no new keys, chords or progressions structures in music, sorry you yankee nerds, stick to discussing Lord Of The Rings

RIGHT, FIRST OFF - similar chord progressions are inevitable but there are far too much similarities between those two songs for comfort - key, tempo, lyrical themes. it is without doubt a clear rip off.
SECONDLY - if tom petty is guilty of releasing crap since full moon fever (although i think wildflowers is a great album!!!) the chilli's have not released anything really worth a listen since blood sugar sex magic! and resorting to ripping off people wont help them fix that!!

see also mike stipe and throwing muses "your ghost", i think is the name of the song.
rhcp one should have been caught sooner though,
and in fairness once you have one petty album you pretty much have em all...

That was a duet with Kirsten Hersh of Throwing Muses wasn't it? Might explain it.
